Title: Winter in the Alps
Post by: NikoJorj on February 07, 2009, 03:52:13 pm
There's something I like in this image, but I just can't find the right way to make it shine...
Comments, critiques and suggestions welcome.

Great image, however, I think that all of the magic of the image is in the background. The snowpack in the foreground is quite distracting to me.

OK, thanks for your input... but I can't find a satisfying crop, that brings a distracting part of the tree/bush at the bottom border... I'd be interested if you find one.
And I liked the opposition between the corniche and the opposing slope, I think too.

But asking the question made me rethink about it, and I discovered I had more room than I thought for opening the shadows.

To me, the photo is more about planes and shape and volume.  In my version, I desaturated the blue a bit, cropped, dodged & burned, and used curve adjustments.  Nice image.

I too feel that the interest is in the distance, with the peak set in front of a fog-shrouded valley, and think the foreground snow detracts--it just doesn't lead into the scene.

Thanks! Yes, definitely, there's a bit too much sky in my (uncropped) version.
Even if I like your desaturated version much, I'm a bit more reluctant to do so because I really see in colors, and I'm not able to visualize anything in B&W at all (lucky for me to live in the digital photography era).

V0.3 with also a quick'n'dirty dodging to guide the eye a bit more...

It's a nice image, so I had to add my version.

I tried to add more contrast in the snow as some of the paterns are interesting. Also, I opened the shadows in the mid ground, and removed more of the blue cast to to let some of the other colors reveal themselves. -R
