Title: canon 17-85 opinions
Post by: joedevico on April 11, 2005, 10:59:20 am
Hello All,

I'm going out this Thursday to buy a 20D(main) and Rebelxt(backup) to replace my current D30(main) and Elan 7(backup) setup. As you can see, I'm not in the same league as some of you with respect to gear, but have learned a lot from this site and it's forums. For me, this is all a hobby. Anyway, I have the following lens' and want to purchase one with the new bodies and was hoping for some opinions on the 17-85.

Michael gave it some comments in his 20D review, however never followed up with the DXO report. Basically, I need to know if the lens is worth the money or not. I have no problem spending $600 if the lens will give me $600 results compared to my current line-up. I know it's no 17-40L or 70-200L f4, however it covers my two currently most used ranges and my results with these two lenses has been satisfactory for me.

Anyway here's what I've been using most often:

Tokina 19-35 f3.5-4.5
Canon 24-85mm f3.5-4.5
Canon 50mm f1.8
Canon 70-200L f4

I guess what I really want to know is from real world users. Do you think it's a similar/better lens than the 24-85 and 19-35? Obviously, the IS is beneficial and I'm willing to give up some bokeh for the ease of having one lens on the camera to cover both of the other lens' ranges. It seems that it's a good deal, but I've read some negative things about this lens on the net, and Since Michael never posted any DXO results, I'm not sure if his silence was because he stopped using the lens or never got around to it.

Thanks for any thoughts.

SORRY - I realize this should have been posted in the Cameras, Lenses, etc. Forum.
