After a few years I finally had some good conditions to photograph snowflakes today.

Well done! I see you managed NOT to breathe on the slide!

Well done! And to think it only took a few years, now that's what I call beginner's luck!
How'd you do that?

Not quite beginners luck, I've been photographing them since 2005 but the storms since 06 haven't been the best for snowflake production.
I use a Canon 1dsmk3 with a 65mm macro lens at about 5X magnification. I also used three flashes.
Here is a pic of me shooting from a few years ago.

That is beautiful. I'm impressed with that and with your other work. It is interesting how this snowflake is six stems, and #2 on your site is more solid. After looking at these and the eclipse photograph, I might guess that your work appears in science books or magazines.

Thanks. No science books yet, mostly calendars and framed pieces hanging on peoples walls. I photographed the above photo Sunday. Strange snowflakes from that storm, some of the flakes appear to have twelve sides. I'll have to post one.
BTW, the eclipse photo is my best seller.

Dan:
Just got my confirmation of new "membership" and your image here is the first thing I opened.
Bogie said it best: truly this will be the beginning of a beautiful friendship...
Wonderful, and inspiring work, Sir.
