Title: Video card for CS4?
Post by: sniper on January 09, 2009, 11:51:46 am
This is picking up from another thread (and I didn't want to hijack it)  What would be a good video card for CS4 (win XP pro 32 bit) I don't want to pay a silly price for one, but something half decent??  Wayne

Here's a list of tested cards for CS4...  Might just browse at www.newegg.com and see what's the cheapest.

Yes, that is very handy in terms of compatibility, but what that list is also telling you is that (as it has always been with Photoshop) video card does not really matter. You can see on the list some very cheap cards that will cost you less that 80Euros and others that cost more that 500. Unless you are planning to do any 3D work on CS4, I would say get a card that fits your other needs ie double monitor support, gaming, video editing etc. and don't think of Photoshop 2D needs so much. I have a cheap-ish Ati radeon that cost about 100Euros and it runs with no problems, even on ocational video editing work.

This is no longer true with CS4.  The video card does matter now that Photoshop is offloading more processing from the CPU to the video card.  Things like the openGL functions work better with better video cards.

I agree with Doug.  Also, given that some people have had anomalies show up (like partial brush cursors) in CS4 with cards that are supposedly OpenGL compatible but not on the Adobe tested list, I would recommend sticking with the list or making sure the store has a no-questions-asked/no-re-stocking-fee policy for returning the card.

FWIW, I'm using a ATI Radeon 4850 card with 512MB of memory. Seems to do quite well and wasn't too horribly expensive, around $140.
