Title: z3100 expired ink
Post by: TJM on December 29, 2008, 12:39:40 am
I have recently purchased a z3100 and have purchased a full set of ink for when I need to replace the starter cartridges.  One of the inks will expire in Jan. 2009.  The salesman says that they can be installed up to a year later with no issues.  I asked about them being in warranty and how expired ink would affect the warranty.  He said it wouldn't matter.  Is that true?  Also I was sent a "cyan" C9452A rather than the "Light Cyan" C9390A that the manual lists.  Are they interchangeable?

Thanks for any help.

Firstly welcome to the board! You will find a wealth of info here!

Next, get rid of that Cyan, it is not the same color as light cyan and must not be used. I think they are for the 8 color Z2100. You will not get predictable colors. The Z3100 does not use Cyan ink.

If you ever need to call HP about any color issues they will ask that all your ink is inside warranty and may refuse to help you until you replace it, at your cost. Don't buy ink that has a date that expires before you can reasonably use it. A good supplier should have ink that has about 18 months or so left. Go somewhere else if they cant do this. They are selling you ink that is old and no good to you - the salesman you are dealing with is pulling a fast one. Don't buy it!

Most likely the ink can be used (you can still print with expired ink) and won't affect your colors but perhaps the colors may become unstable and HP will insist on eliminating this variable before they help you with a warranty call (with a color problem).

Come to think of it, the Z3100's don't come with 'starter' carts, they come with a complete and full set of the full size cartridges, 130ml. You really don't need to buy another set. I still have about half of my setup carts and I have had my printer a year!

Edit: Added the last paragraph. And spelling.

That's news to me, as my Z3100 came with a full set of 69mm carts.

24" models came with 69ml carts and the 44" models came with 130ml carts.  That's how it was at one time anyway.

Thanks for all the good advice.  It sure helps to have people who know what they are talking about.

Take Care.
