The Rockwood Lunatic Asylum was an active psychiatric facility was active from 1859 to 1997. It is the site where many atrocious events of cruelty were witnessed and a stands as a sobering reminder of how mental illness used to be 'treated'.
I went to this place last week, during a decently miserable day (weather wise), and captured these two images. Hopefully they are gloomy enough. I have color versions of these as well. I had trouble deciding on which versions I thought were better. Let me know if you want to see the colored versions.

I'd very much doubt that colour would add anything to these shots, particularly given the background information on the place itself.
I particularly like the second one. My only slight gripe is that both of them look to me as if they could do with a couple of degrees of anti-clockwise rotation: they seem to slope downwards to the right.

I agree with your comments.
The first image doesn't do anything for me, I don't see anything of interest - sorry!
The second image has potential, but in the current rendition, it looks a bit too "flat" in tonality. I suggest trying to pump up the midtone contrast a bit, and perhaps fiddle with the reds and oranges in the channel mix.
