Title: D70: Number of Pictures in RAW format
Post by: pfoiles on May 21, 2004, 12:43:00 am
I have the Canon 10D and recently obtained the D70 to have access to some Nikkor lenses.  I noticed that both cameras have approximately the same sized raw files but for a 1 gig card the D70 estimates 99 shots and the 10D 169. My real world experience is that both cameras give about 170-175 shots for a 1 gig card. What I conclude from this is that Nikon uses a worst case estimate for the number of shots while Canon uses a more realistic but slightly conservative estimate.

The Nikon approach strikes me as a little too conservative since I don't evey recall ever getting fewer than the camera estimated number of shots on the D30/D60/10D/G2/Pro1 Canon cameras that I have used.

I get around 175 per 1 GB card.  You can do a quick test.  Select RAW and then shoot until you run out of room on the card and then  look at the display to see how many shots you just did.  Use a CD rack or something that is very busy to run the test.  The D70 compresses the RAW files, so by using a busy scene you will force the D70 to compress a file the least.

I am looking into the D70. I noticed that a 1GB card will hold 291 JPEG images, but only 94 RAW ones, or about three times as many JPEGs. Yet the size estimates I have seen vary from 2.5 - 2.9 MB for the JPEGs and from 5 - 5.4 MB for the RAW images. If a RAW file is at most 5.4MB, shouldn't one be able to get at least 185 pictures per megabite?

I just got back from a trip with my new D70, and found that the number of exposures left must be a conservative estimate that is subject to change.  With my 1 gig card, the camera started out by telling me that it had a capacity of 87 RAW+jpg frames.  I took about 35 shots, and it told me I still had a 66 frame capacity left.  Do the math.  It would likely hold considerably more than 87 if I had used up the capacity.

I believe this is a known bug in the D70 firmware, It only affects the "estimated" number of files stored, not the actual capacity.
