Title: Canon EOS 20D Shutter Lack
Post by: Jonathan Wienke on September 02, 2005, 03:35:34 pm
First off, it's shutter lag, not shutter lack. And on the 20D, it's comparable to film SLRs. ISO 3200 is noisy, but much cleaner than comparably fast film. If you're shooting live events in poor lighting there is no advantage whatsoever to using film.

Hey, it's no different than the accountant friend of mine who used to say an account was "30 days in the rear" instead of 30 days in arrears". If someone is walking down the street with their skirt tucked into their panties, it's better to tell them and let them be embarrassed than not tell them and make a bigger spectacle of themselves.

Words mean things. Learning to use the correct word to convey the meaning you intend is never a bad thing.

Hey Guys,

Thanks for both the tips on the vocabulary and items I posted. I feel very luggy that someone pointed this out to me  :D
If anyone could direct me to where I could find examples of this 'noise' you are talking about, that'd be cool too.

Best regards

I also like the following site:

http://www.imaging-resource.com (http://www.imaging-resource.com)

They tend to have example pictures at various ISOs. And there is a review of the 20D too:

http://www.imaging-resource.com/PRODS/E20D/E20DA.HTM (http://www.imaging-resource.com/PRODS/E20D/E20DA.HTM)

And here's an ISO 3200 example:

There might be more ...though I didn't see any high ISO night shots

Hello,

I'm considering to start using digital next to analog and I've tried to gather as much info on the 20D as possible, but there are two items that remain a bit of a mystery to me :

a. what is the shutter lack on the 20D (=the time between clicking the button and the time the photo is actually registered) and
b. what are people's experiences with the ISO 3200? Does it deliver or do pictures come out in lamentable quality?

Both issues are crucial as I tend to shoot a lot of live shows with rather poor lighting circumstances and the need to register at the exact peak that I want to.

If there's anyone out there who has positive or negative experiences with one or both these points I'd be happy if you could share 'em.

Best regards

Brutal: Hey, Jonathan you've got to start answering these questions AFTER that first cup of coffee in the morning and not before ...

But back to the question, if you shoot ISO 3200 on the 20D you'll want to include a copy of Neat Image, Noise Ninja or Dfine in the budget to clean up the images. Using these, or the more sophisticated noise reduction techniques in PS, you'll get images that are very acceptable for the lighting conditions. The good news is that the 20D doesn't get all blotchy with high ISO noise.

As Jonathan says, the shutter lag is minimal and certainly no worse than any other film SLR.

Take a look at any of the in-depth camera reviews at dpreview.com and there's an entire page dedicated to noise performance for the camera in each review.

The shutter lag of 20D should be 65 ms (at least I've read that in a magazine here...).
The fastest D-SLR is Nikon D2Hs/D2X/D2H with 37 ms and Canon EOS 1-D mk. II with 40 ms. Since the fastest film SLR appears to be Nikon F6 (or F5, don't know which exactly), which also has 34 ms shutter lag, then 20D does fairly well in this competition of FAR MORE expensive AND PROFESSIONALY built cameras...

Iso 3200 is very useable IMO
