Hi,

1. Opera has a 'Personal Bar' for bookmarks that can be shown as images, text or both. I use images, since most websites have unique logos. Earlier the forum showed the LL logo, which has been replaced by the generic Invision Software logo. Can we please get the old logo back?

2. For Forum Options, can we have "Mark forum as read and return to board index" show up separately rather than in the dropdown menu. That's one click less!

Thanks,
Kumar

1. I will look into this.

2. I have no control over this, this is something that is part of the main forum code.

Looks great in Chrome, FF and IE here - and the header is really nice - best ever!

I'll second that request.  Overall a nice upgrade.  It seems a little quicker but that's just an impression.

Win XP Pro SP3 - FireFox 3.0.3

Not sure what the Quick Access panel on the left is supposed to look like although it doesn't look right.  The text overruns the box.

That's what I initially thought as well.  I could not find the add attachment button like before.  It just wasn't there, but the next time I logged onto to the forum the attachment dialog box had reappeared.

Was having that problem.  After reading your post, I cleared my browser cache file, and then the attachment options were there.

Never mind all your sophisticated problems, I have trouble getting the damn thing to behave half as well as it did before!

I seem to have to click twice to enter the forum and simple actions, all I ever do here, are less securely achieved with a fair bit of dithering back and forth; it also takes longer to be able to start to write a post.

What was broke that needed fixed?

Apart from the economy, of course...

Is it possible to have a better search function that does not have the 4 character limit? It's very difficult to search for say a Sinar P3.

Thanks,
Kumar

There are multiple ways it can be done.  The easiest is to switch from the default Simple Search to Fulltext, which allows any string regardless of size.  2nd would be to change the minimum search string from the default 4 to 2.  Better software packages allow you to keep the larger minimum limit to speed server response but also allow manual entry of short strings to be searchable.

Overall, the search features built into forum software are 99% useless anyway.  Only use google to search a forum.  MR has placed a handy dandy search field on the front of his site for just such a need (or you can do it from Google.com). http://www.luminous-landscape.com/ (http://www.luminous-landscape.com/)

The real slick forums replace the search field in the forum with google.

Search has been updated, you should be able to do better searches now, no more 3 char limit (since we are using fulltext MySQL options it's no longer super CPU intensive).  As for using google in place of the main forum one it's possible, but it requires hacking up the forum code, which is never a good idea.  The way IPB does their updates it means potential issues each and every time we need to do a security patch, so you'll all have to live with the MySQL fulltext searches (or for the geekier in the crowd use google yourself to do it by entering something like "Canon G10 site:luminous-landscape.com/forum/" into google.

You don't need to alter the forum code, you could simply add the same code from the main site to the header file for example.  It would at least give the better option on the forums directly.  Even if you want to make it prettier and add it to the template code, big deal, just paste it in if the file gets upgraded in the future.

Thanks for the change, it should help many people.

Okay, I can search for Sinar P3, but not P3 by itself. I still have to wade through pages referencing Sinar, that do not necessarily have 'P3' in them. Room for further improvement?

To that one I have to say RTFM.  Read the info for using advanced search. If you want to search BOTH of those terms there is syntax to accomplish it.

As for modifying the headed IPB doesn't work like that. We would have to make ( and continue to manage/update custom templates)

You can't be serious - or maybe you are and just don't know squat about webmastering this forum?

Here, for simple comparison, showing how inadequate the forum search is even after 'RTFM' as you so sarcastically (and incorrectly) put it.

Using the techniques available through the 'Advanced Search' as you called it, searching for p3* produces more misses than hits, with most results showing p3 as part of a string such as printer models and file names.  Not useful - next.

Searching for "sinar p3" produces 26 threads including this one.  Most are not returned.

Searching for +sinar +p3 ignores the +p3 all together producing useless results.

Searching for +sinar +p3* produces 2 threads.

Searching through the google tool for sinar p3 produces 89 results, by far the winner.

I hope your boss doesn't fall for the BS you guys tell them when you say things like 'it's not possible' 'it doesn't work that way'.  You clearly (to those of us that REALLY DO KNOW what we are talking about) don't have clue one.

Here's the bottom line - the search here (and on most forums) is not setup correctly to provide meaningful searches.  In some cases it is not possible given server limitations or software limitations.  It IS very easy to add google search.  To the bosses here, PLEASE get some other opinions and don't simply rely on this 'expert'.

I'm sorry in advance if anyone thinks this is rude.  It just pisses me off when an admin acts in such a way to the users, especially when they are clearly in the wrong.  Telling that guy to RTFM was simply uncalled for.

I RTFM, and I was trying all the possible options to search for P3, and like kaelaria, I couldn't get meaningful results. Through the Google search on the main page, there are 370 results for P3, and at least the first two pages have exactly what I was looking for. I hope you can do something about it.

Thanks,
Kumar

In regards to the RTFM comment I was referring to the "Advanced Usage Help" text that gives pointers that answer the exact question the user was asking and was in no way trying to be rude to the user in question, but trying to point out a resource that they were likely unaware of.  I also wasn't trying to say that this forum's search was better than google's search, so I'm not sure where that whole rant came from.

As for "thinking" it was rude I'm not sure how else it could be taken it as it was a personal attack against me and my professional ability with an aside telling Michael that I don't know what I'm talking about.  I'll walk away from the rest of the comments.  Your response was completely uncalled for.

Okay mguertin, let's drop the other stuff. Please tell me how I can search for P3 on the forum, without having to go to the LL main page and go through Google. And if it isn't possible right now, can it be done? And while we're talking about that, I wonder if the background color on the Google results page can be changed. I'm not sure about others, but I find it a little difficult to read the colored text on a black background.

Thanks again,
Kumar

I'm another one who is being prompted to logon every day.

I always use the "view new posts" option, which is when I now get the logon prompt.
I then select this thread, and when I want to post this message I am prompted to logon again.

Sometimes logging on via the top/right box does not work, and it kicks me out to the full screen logon page, but this is not consistent, sometimes yes, sometimes no. Some days it won't let me logon at all, but if I return a few hours later I am successful.

I've done the whole delete cookies thing. I've even cleared LL completely from my Favourites, cleared all temp files, and re-loaded LL, still no joy. It just cannot seem to remember me.

Never had any of these issues prior to the recent changes. Been a member for years.

Interesting . . . I frequent about 25 different discussion forums in any one week, and have done for the past 10 years or more. No logon problems on any of them, bar one (just two months ago), and I've just noticed a common denominator . . . both are "IP Board", and both upgraded recently.

P.S. . . . To load the reply above I had to login three times, and it would only allow me to post if I selected the "preview post" option, a straight reply bombed every time telling me I was not logged in.

P.P.S. . . . To post this reply I have thusfar had to login at least 6-8 times (lost count), it may be more when I press enter now!

An "upgrade" I would like to see is the forum for ....... Discussions regarding Photoshop and other image processing topics .......to be just that! In my mind it is for Photoshop subjects ........ such as how to use layers, sharpening, etc etc. Not about drivers for Artisan monitors and processing speed and ram. These are computer problems. Should there not be a forum for that. Moderator please take note!

Thank you for documenting the problem in detail, as I'm experiencing the same thing.  I haven't deleted LL from my Bookmarks but did all the other steps you mentioned.  In Firefox, I also went to the list of site exceptions (Tools->Options->Privacy->Exceptions) and deleted Luminous Landscape.  No change.

When I unchecked "Accept third-party cookies," the message board wouldn't remember me at all.  I'm wondering if there is a cookie involved that's not coming from the luminous-landscape.com domain, but so far I haven't been able to locate it.  It's almost as if a cookie is expiring too fast.

Folks with problems might want to try the Opera browser. I have had zero problems with the new forum upgrade under Opera. I use Firefox for websites that misbehave under Opera, but LL and the forum seem to do just fine with Opera (on a PC running Vista 32).

Near the bottom of the main forum page there is a link that says "Delete cookies set by this board" ... for the users that are still having problems please try using this link to delete all of the cookies.  Then _immediately_ quit your browser (might not be a bad idea to reboot your machine as well to ensure nothing persists) and try coming back and logging in.

If you're still having problems after you've done this them more details about which browsers and OSes you're using might be in order ...

I've tested ok on:

Windows XP IE6, IE7, IE8 (beta 2), Firefox 2.x and 3.x, Safari 3.x
Windows Vista IE7, IE8, FF 2.x and 3.x, Safari 3.x
OSX 10.4.x and 10.5.x, Firefox 2.x and 3.x, Safari 2.x and 3.x

All working ok here.  I don't usually test Opera (because it usually behaves pretty well!) but glad to hear it's working fine there too.

Try deleting your temp internet files (go into IE, Tools), also make sure your cache is set to a reasonable number like 20MB.

Try deleting your user temp directory c:\documents and settings\username\local files\temp

I've have clicked on LL's "clear cookies" option, I have cleared them via the browser, I have cleared all temp files . . . I've pretty much cleared everything which can possibly be cleared, to the extent that I had to re-logon to all my other frequented websites, all of which continue to log me on without issue, except the new LL.

I have loaded FIREFOX, and the logon problem still lingers . . . the site just does not seem to "hold" my logon details, even within the same session. To get to this reply box I was prompted to logon, despite being shown as logged on.

My typical LL experience is . . .
Bring up the website (it will not log me in automatically)
I log myself on.
I click on "view new topics" and am prompted to logon again.
I browse the threads, if I choose to reply I am prompted to logon again (tells me the menu is disabled?).
When I press OK to my reply I am prompted yet again to logon.

The last two points can occur numerous times. With this particular reply I am now on my 10th attempt. It might take more. There is some semblence of memory since my username and password are always shown in the appropriate login boxes, but I am not logged in. When I am successful in posting a reply it returns me to the board as being "logged out"!

I draw your attention to an earlier point . . .

"I frequent about 25 different discussion forums in any one week, and have done for the past 10 years or more. No logon problems on any of them, bar one (just two months ago), and I've just noticed a common denominator . . . both are "IP Board", and both upgraded recently."

Something has changed in IP Board's LL logon settings. I had no problems logging on to LL prior to the recent upgrade. I have no problems with any other of my frequented websites. It shouldn't be a peak load/traffic issue because I am about 9 time zones away.

Of course I haven't ruled out the possibility that the LL board is, politely, trying to tell me to sod off! But thusfar I have retained my sense of humour, and a degree of patience . . . albeit somewhat thinner!

WTF? Why does the cookie expire immediately? Edit, I see that it expires in a year, but maybe there is some code that needs to read 2009 and instead reads 2008? I'm still having to relog in a million times a day using a Mac Pro and a PowerMac and Safari.

Just a guess, but looking at the "forum_read" cookie it looks to be quite old... not sure if this is where the trip up is being caused.  I've still not had any issues at all with things here and have tested quite extensively with multiple accounts/browsers, etc.

2 things I can suggest to try if you haven't done so already.  First make sure the time and timezone on your computer are set correctly (using an ntp server/allowing OS to set from a server is best for this).  Also not sure if it makes any kind of difference but check to see that your timezone setting in your forum profile matches your timezone set on your machine.  You can find this in "My Controls" -> Options -> Board Settings.

These are just grasping at straws as I can't reproduce the issues and for most people clearing out any older/leftover cookies solved this.
