Title: Lets see those workhorses!
Post by: sid_v on September 25, 2008, 03:55:19 pm
hey guys,

we've seen the work, now lets see those cams/hybrid-cams that help u get the work done. Just post some pics of your main workhorse, with its unique paint tears and/or scars, or any modifications u have done on it, or heck, even if its brand new.

heres my black beauty...rb67h20, a blend of the first generation of hardcore mechanics with state of the art electronics. Glad i chose this over the 1dsmark3. More happy after the 5d2 announcement.

adapter mod: the red circle in the third pic indicates the pin in the adapter plate that wakes the back when u half press the shutter release. This not only makes capture in a single click possible, but also there is no absolutely no shutter lag.

hey samuel, love ur setup. The 80 2.8 is a killer.....wish my 90mm was a 2.8 instead of 3.5.

hey brad, lovely images....the first one and the horse one are my favourite. Do u travel with the entire kit everywhere???

I guess all the rest are busy with the megapixel race, trying to justify a p60whatever over their  p30s??

Is there a used market?
I hate to buy anything new...
I am looking for a high sync solution and that the Rollei is a classic. Very beautiful camera and the lens look amazing.
I know nothing about lens for the Rollei. Just know they are sharp.
I was just wondering what it would set me back to change platforms. I am using RZII and Mamiya at the moment. 1/400th is not that great and I really for some reason, maybe stupid, just do not like Hassleblad.. I know it is a good camera but something about it makes me think it is plasticy and not very sturdy.
Thanks for any information if you have any and want to let me know.
Hope no body get's upset if you post it here, if so you can private message me.
Thanks
Snook

PS. I am sure you know it but that is one beautiful camera and the lens are sick...:+}
Are they fast lens? could not see what f stop they are from your image.

Thank you, Sid.

I do sometimes travel with all the lenses + TC (particularly on a long trip without too much hiking where the opportunities will be unknown), but when I'm in the mountains or doing other strenuous work to get to the location, I usually select only two + TC.  I had 'em all with me in Iceland when I shot the horses, though.

Graham, is that a Zeiss 50 FLE I see in the background?  Any chance you could send me a shot at infinity taken with it?

You can certainly get a 6008AF with an 80mm and 150mm quite readily. Some other lenses can take longer to find.

There's quite a lot of Rollei gear in the LL 'for sale' forum right now, including at least 7 lenses.

Please not this combo is high on quality, but the lack of digital interface means you have to use sync cable. There is no EXIF available, and you need to set the ISO manually on both the camera and the back. This is probably no different to the RZ, but I have no experience of that.

One of the reasons I chose Rollei to begin with was the fastest leaf shutter lenses. For example, there's a 50mm f2.8, 80mm f2, 110mm f2 and 180mm f2.8. Much faster than Mamiya RZ, right?

Hi Leonardo,
Slightly off topic here but...
I see you shoot with an L bracket.
I do same but to shoot that way whilst tethered need a right angle usb cable...have you found one or do you not shoot tethered with that set up?

Thanks.

Marc, I have the same set-up and shoot tethered fine. what are you shooting that is USB????
I shoot with Phase and the firewire goes in the back of the back.
Can you be more specific? I never even new there was anything else but firewire for tethering MFDB?

um..I'm currently shooting with a 5d but try to keep that quiet round here!!

to get the same flexibility as I do from my 35mm kit I'd realistically need least crop mfdb with both slr and shift camera outfits and right now that is not possible for me..soon though I hope as I'm used to large format quality from my fine art and would dearly love the same very high quality for my commercial shooting.

(have just found good source of right angle cables though so I'm ok now..)

mine is afd-PhaseOne P25 that does not have USB but FireWire and connects in the back so there is no problem when rotating the camera. The bracket was good when shooting different paintings because the axis of the lens remains the same saving time adjusting the tripod and tripod head. Also the center of gravity of the camera remains on top of tripod and tripod head. I recommend the Arca Swiss adapter to hold the bracket that has a safety mechanism...

..yes snook, I know Leonardo shoots afd from post, but was not sure how connection worked with his back, so thought I'd ask anyway as did also wonder how the heavier mf set fared on the L plates.

Thanks for comments Leonardo, good to know L plates work as well on heavier mf/db set up.

anyway, sorry to have taken this post off topic.

Cheers.

here is my p45+ the day I received it about a year ago.  I now use it on Mamiya, because my 4x5 could not focus accurately enough.
I wish I had samuel's hassy set up.  I may have to get a back switch.

What is the goal of this? Tilts and shifts? Why go to this trouble, over say, Hassie or Contax or Mamiya?

Yes of course,  it is for tilts and shifts, as well as the capabilities of the stitching back, not to mention the superior sharpness of the Schnieder D lenses.

i know this very good photographer that stitches. most everything and he shots with the canon eos mark III and the canons tilt shift lens.

[a href=\"http://tinyurl.com/4wwwlg]http://tinyurl.com/4wwwlg[/url]

he hand holds and stitches moving people together in the photograph.

it's like magic that he can do this.

but he does do this.

Hi thomas,
this is a P20 so the sensor is squared. The crop factor is 1,5. No very wide but stitching works when needed.

This is my latest beast.

I had a engineer make a adapter plate using a old Mamiya extension tube so I could mount my Mamiya 645AFDII on to a Horseman VCC view camera adapter.

rarely use this anymore.... the 1ds3 is just an easier and quicker workflow ( I tend to shoot 1000's of frames on a 1 day shoot )..... and the MBP's won't drive the fireiwire without a power booster. but the fcm2000/110 f2, 50 f2.8/H20 has given me over 20,000 fantastic captures.

Thank you, yes.
The Zeiss lenses via adapter are ok, I now got a 100mm Digitar and it's really great, very sharp.
I use the Rmfx viewfinder from Hasselblad in the studio, easy working when you have strobes. the Silvestri viewer "Easy bellow" isn't that good. The groundglass could be better too on location, I'm trying to contact B.Maxwell for an offer.
I don't regret selling 2 old Sinars and the Flexbody. It's an allround toy, a very good one, of course there a specialized cameras for architecture-only people and more sophisticated view cameras for studio guys.
Still waiting for a 35mm, heard about problems when stitching with wide angle lenses. But I'm not a stitching guy anyway.

Not gear but my new studio here in La Paz... with the light bank that I just built from scratch. That is 2m tall (6.56 feet) and checked it with my spot flash meter that it has absolute even trow. The design has same principle as Elinchrom with the head pointing back in to the center of the bank (like a huge umbrella) with no reflector...

I will have my firs sitting tomorrow and will probably post some images here (I said probably in case the shoot crashes and burns ... no postings

I love the Contax, it's in my view the best looking 645 out there. When i was choosing camera I went with Mamiya instead, but only because the Contax was discontinued. It's a shame really, a Contax 645 Mk2 would have been amazing to see.

Frankly, I really don't know what Contax Mk2 needs to be?  except may be faster sync, it is as good as I need.  We just need it to be reintroduced, supported. I hope by the time Zeiss finally got their contract with Kyocera ended, there will be some magic to resurrect the camera?

Snook, love that lens-shade.
Is it mamiya-branded or third-party?

I'm wondering if I could get one of those for 35mm....

Mamiya...:+}
it is beautiful..
Got it new in Box from a guy on ebay that I have bought half my Mamiya stuff from.. He has great prices.
he is great. I think his name is amuhya ..?
If your really interested I'll try and find his ebay account name. he is one of the biggest mamiya sellers on ebay.

what 35mm? you mean 35mm camera or lens?
I have the same one for my AFDII but it is a lttle smaller *bellowsHood. both bought from him new in box.
on a 35mm lens your going to have very little room with out getting vignetting I would imagine.

Nope, I meant 35mm DSLR, not a 35mm MF lens.

I'm used to bellowshoods on 4x5inch, I've seen 'em in use on quite al ot of MF gear, but never for DSLRs.
Hence the reason I asked, plus your bellows has this handy collapsing mechanism.

It's just a more honest design, compared to these stupid plastic shades that fit canon/nikon lenses....

Does your Leaf Contare have Verto?

David

Yes indeed it does, what I would really love is a 22mp Cantare, I know the AptusII 10 is close, but for some things multi shot still shafts more pixels every time. I have asked, and no it is never going to happen.

Cheers,
Jason.

Believe it or not, I didn't set this up but sitting at the computer looking at the set it seemed appropriate for this thread.  I can't include the shot I was on until next month but it was a sheetmetal detail.  Jim

I decided today to switch out my mount from 645 to V on my P45+.  I love the size and the feel of the 503 with phase back.  It doesn't feel awkward and lumpy like the AFD III.  Thanks for the photos, they inspired me to go see my dealer and play with the Hasselblad setup.  I also played with the new Phase Camera and lenses.  I have to say the glass on the new tilt shift Phase (Hartblei)  Looks much nicer than it was on my real Hartblei 45mm. The rest of the lens is pretty much the same.
I can't wait for the Hassy.

Hey I suggest this for everybody.
If you don't have one Go get your self a Pigtail either Firewire 400 or 800.
It will save your port if anybody happens to trip over it.
I notice in this image you have a mountain clamp.. is that what that is for? Some kind of safety thing?
A friend of mine suggested it and I am sure glad I got one. I use a Fire wire 800 cable to Mac and then use a 5 inch long Pigtail connector and if it get's yamked it comes out from the pigtail and not the back of the camera..
Just so those that do not know about that...:+}
Snook
PS. you can see it kind of in my post of my camera above... the short firewire cable!!

That looks like the Nodal Ninja that I want to get for my Hasselblad 503cw.
Very jealous !!
I am very eager to do some panoramic stitching with it.
Nice one!

The tripod is a Gitzo GT5540LS followed by

RRS Ultimate Pro Omni Pivot pano package sitting on a Acratech leveling base.

The camera body is a Phase 645 and the lens is the Mamiya 28mm (it's for sale!  )

The coiled cable is my remote shutter release - the blue cord is to my expodisk.

The image was shot in my backyard in Tucson AZ.

Thanks for asking...

Couple G9 snappie poos.

Of particular note is the "InfiniHood"...my infinitely adjustable lens shade.  Gaffer tape and Blackout material.

And the note on the viewfinder that reminds which way to turn the focus wheel when fine tuning the focus.

I put the camera on one of my large format rails to accomplish two things.

When I need to either relax the crop or to come in a bit on the shot I just need to roll it back or forward on the rail.  Instead of going through the hassle of rolling the entire stand, it much easier this way and keeps the camera in the same perspective.

And since the camera focuses by the lens and thus changes the lens to subject distance which changes the magnification, on MCU's and ECU's it makes it easier to focus by rolling the entire camera in or out rather moving the lens only.

Man that is what I call a real camera, just fantastic.  Not like these sissy cameras that people are using these days, you know the 5D, 1DS 3, D3's etc. I think I'll throw mine away and get one of these. That should impress the clients.........

Here is a recent picture on set of the two camera systems I use and a behind the scene B-Roll motion camera.  Plus, the best Boombox around by BOSE!

I shot quite a few medium format systems, but the longest history and mileage goes to Contax 645 and Phase backs, and lenses (includes come Hasselblad CF/FE lenses thru MAM-1), and Alpa 12.

WOW!!!
