From yesterday. In between shots for a winery in the Napa Valley.
Not that it matters for this shot because it could've been shot with anything but Leaf A75.
-
@Snickgrr.
Could you explain more about the shot.
It seems totally out of focus.... but I like the patterns (although I'm not too sure about the white horizontal bar).

Yep, totally out of focus. Shot it that way, straight out of the camera. You're right it's all about the pattern. The horizontal bar, in my mind, makes the shot.

hi,
These pics were made on a busy street in Firenze, last August. ( I only processed them with LR this week) My attempt at street photography with a med format. I basically stood still and pressed the shutter as the people walked past.
Thanks, Ivan

Frank-
Both shots are interesting, but something about your first shot really stands out for me. It is one of my favorite images from this thread and the one about everybody copying everybody else. Perhaps I'm just a sucker for well executed surrealism, but I love the atmosphere and composition The white figure with the splash invokes Cocteau's Beauty and the Beast for me (in a good way, OK?). Thanks for posting it.

I am forever amazed at the quality of photos in the MFDB threads. I always want to comment on each but kind of feel that I should hold back.
Ivan,
Great street photos, so well done.
Frank,
Very moody on the first and very film looking, I like that. The second is not only a fun photo but also shows the difference a good model can make.
As for my fire photo, yes that was hot! I was not very far behind those guys and that was a fuel fire.
-
thanks Ian,
I made these last Aug, but it took me a while(worked on them for the first time last week) to notice and appreciate them. At first I simply didn't think they were any good at all. The nice thing about large and good quality files are that at 100% you see so much more detail that you just dont see initially at screen size!
Regards, Ivan
-
Ivan,
Must ask, what camera/lens/back did you use to shoot these street images?
Assume tripod mounted?
They're great - lots of detail, DOF, just fun to study all that's going into the frame.
Jack

hi Jack,
Thanks! I purposefully omitted camera info from this topic( a bit self conscious because I only have a lowly mamiya!). I do agree that these pics should actually be printer LARGE! for all the info and detail they have.
ZD camera with 35mm lens. Fstop was mostly 4.8 and shutter 1/90th. ISO 200. Handheld. Because of the camera size etc etc I held the camera to my eye and waited for the people to move into the frame. The result is lots of photos with people looking straight at the camera! Next time perhaps I will put it on a tripod and use the cable release. This particular morning I went for a walk with the camera and a few lenses in my pocket, but actually only used the 35mm, and I was quite surprised at the number of photos that looked ok. A bit of desaturation in LR and perspective and lens distortion correction in photoshop
Ive got some more ''street' photos at flickr.
Regards Ivan

Frank,
I like the shot number 2. Very nice composition.
Also I have to say that I very much dislike the shot number 1. These two do not look like they are shot by the same photog, nor does the shot number one does any justice to the pretty girl from shot 2 and 4. Just my opinion, hope you do not mind.

can I post something that I had in a mag that wasn't shot with a 35mm DLRS? I just got it in the mail today...
from the newest altpress:
the original was TERRIBLE. I shot it chimped and thought "wow.. delete that..."
then I was up in canada and sent it with 10 other pictures to a magazine.
I edited it as above with the direction "make it back and white and like life magazine"
I did that instead and won. it is easily the best looking image that I've had in a magazine.
this is the original

nikon D2x 17-55mm the band is underoath (http://www.myspace.com/underoath) which is one of my dirty little secrets.
-
wow... if I sent that to my gf, she would tell me to get that camera right now (she's from campobasso, italy). wow... unlike the pictures of the girl on the beach which would cause her to crush my camera.

What's the advantage of a ringflash over a "normal" flash in these situations? I've noticed a lot of photographers who shoot fashion on location use a ringflash.
I've never understood why though. Anyone care to enlighten me? :-) Frank?

it's simpler then you would think actually.
I use the ringflash in many ways from dominant lightsource to fill in flash but also off camera.
The advantage is that I don't need to bring another head. Just disconnect the ringflash and have an assistant hold it and you have a completly different look and on location it's always take as little as possible.

I would like to second this. I often use a ringflash as a 2nd fill off camera axis. For me the main reason is that i do not have a 2nd flash head for my 7b so on location it's ring + 1 normal head and thats it
But it works a little like a beautydish with a very strong flash head inside (as the ring flash has its own flashtube obviously)
There are purists out there who scorn at this use saying its useless, but hey what works works. I've even used the sun for lumination on occasions

Don't mean to be critical, but there is a 'Recent Works' thread in the 'Digital Cameras, Backs and Shooting Techniques' forum for 35mm and equivalent work, here:

Yes I know this is a MFDB forum, but I saw 135 threads here too, and 135 pics in this thread too. So it's more like a "working pro's" forum for my understanding, actrually this the most "pro" forum I can find and that's why I love here.
Anyway if everyone wants to take it more seriously, it's easy to set up a rule.

dustblue has a point: in the previous thread, there were some non digital back images posted, and in some of those cases, no one dared to call the poster on it...if the db requirement is the rule, then everyone who does not conform, from the famous to the infamous, needs to be told the same thing....

even michael has mentioned in the past that this part of the forum really is the working pro forum (which developed out of the MF forum and still carries that name)....
i don't think anyone would have doubted for one second if dustblue would have said that these images came out of a mf back.....now that he is honest and they happen to be shot with a DSLR he should remove them? that is just silly....
these are high quality images and this is the right place for them....i really don't see the point in allowing ANY image just because it comes from a P45....
there is sadly a certain "elitist" view among some people here, who actually believe that because they paid a higher admission, others should not be allowed to play....
really it is up to michael to sort this out and maybe he will put an end to this by either re-naming the section of the forum or setting up a new sub-forum (i actually don't see the point in that either...everybody knows why they come HERE....)
let's face it....the borders are getting blurred and the reality is that most people shoot both and often on the same job and in the end it is the images that tell the story....
this part of the forum is important because provides the only space (i know of) where i can come and ask questions (in one post) touching every aspect of a job, from preproduction to retouching....i would not post these questions in the LR, aperture or digital imaging part of the forum altough by definition that is where they should go....
sorry for the semi rant but this is a very important/interesting thread and i can't stand seeing good quality contributions being questioned like that....
and as we all know james often posts images shot with canon or leica and nobody asks him to take them down....the thread would be a lot less interesting without them....
-

On the old RG site there was a professional section that few people went to, though we all know the medium format section got the most attention. So maybe a rename might not go that well. It really is up to Michael.
I know it's easier to just go to one section and quickly review what is going on then click off. I don't have time to look into every section to see if there is a topic of interest.
As far as posting images in this recent section I've stopped. It just caused too much noise and negativity. I will post an image in another area of medium format to show an example of something like a tilt shift or the sharpness of the M8 but not in this section.
I do think this format fixation is silly. Brand fixation even more silly. Photographers have always used different formats for different looks or applications and there really never has been any rules. Art Kane shot 35mm Kodachrome when most of the professional world shot 8x10, Peter Lindberg shot some of the world's most compelling fashion with a Nikon, Phillip Dixon also.
Demarchillier and Annie routinely use a Canon and just because Annie uses a Canon to shoot the queen, she's not getting away with anything, or just leveraging her name. She's just using what is right for the moment or the scene.
In fact even for the most diehard medium format user I doubt if few here or anywhere go out on the day without some kind of dslr in the bag.
More because of high iso which is something that medium format doesn't seem to be able to address.
Once again, this format fixation makes no sense. Buy what you want, use what you want but limiting what you look at because the hole in the back of the camera is 25% larger is so silly it's laughable.

I seem to have stirred up a hornet's nest unintentionally. That seems all too easy to do here in these forums... almost as if people are either walking around on egg shells afraid to do anything, or, to the contrary, ready to blast anyone who disagrees with them with both barrels. In any event, I meant no disrespect, and so I apologize.
Mike.

I took no exception to what you wrote. I do think it's just the nature of the internet of blogs in general. They come across as harsh when that wasn't the intent.
Still, I agree it's very difficult to post quickly and from the heart without someone taking offense or getting upset.
We have had a few instances lately where some people, probably out of just boredom, have made a mess of things and kept a lot of people away.
I am sure just writing this will bring them out again.
That's a shame because sharing a photo that is pretty or one you are proud of is a nice thing.

Mike, I don´t think there´s any need to apologise at all. I think that something good might come out of it if the section is indeed retitled Professional.
For the pro it saves time - no disrespect to the gifted amateur, and there are many - and as has been said already, pros use all manner of formats, or at least, they used to! If anything, I would think that the new title would make it even more of a draw for the non-pro to look and possibly learn.
As an extension, why not create another, dedicated site for non-pros?
Regarding James RR, I would be very sorry if he stopped posting pics; one problem, which developed from a single Numero Uno, went on to have very little to do with his pic and everything to do with the bees in other peoples´ bonnets. Let them buzz, Jamezz, not your problem!

This is a beautiful landscape shot. I like the clear composition with just a few elements. And the sunlight on the right side!
What I think is... it would be stronger without the clouds. They bring in a pittoresque level that contradicts the clarity.

And while you're at it ask them to re-do the FOCUS logo it's just straight on on an angled front. Compare with the FORD badge over it. Great lighting and colour from you though. Well, I like the first one! We tend to read from left to right, but the lighting in the plants on the lower right catches my eye, which then wanders over to the ramp and up to the house. A little more detail might be nice, but including that without noise, etc. with mostly available light wouldn't be easy. The second one seems unbalanced to me, and I don't think the brown picnic table/ chairs in what's otherwise mostly monochromatic adds anything. The third one like like an OOF 'accidental' image. The fourth one I think would have been better if you changed perspective to include more of the house and less of the undeveloped yard. Also the OOF railing at the bottom doesn't add anything.
My $0.02

They are just not edited correctly as they were just quick transfers from C-1.

No, it is not reversed. In New Zealand (where the photo was taken), the driver sits on the left of the car (looking from the front to the back of the car) and we drive on the left side of the road!

GTO trouble ... Mamiya AFD-PhaseOne P25
-
I'm starting a month and half catalog shoot. Shooting 2-3 days per week. In the past five years or so it's been in my studio but this year the company decided it would be best if we shot closer to them. I rented a space down there, moved one of my camera stands and some lights down and set up shop. The company is located in a small sleepy coastal town thirty miles down the coast. A beautiful drive along a highway that clings precipitously to the coastal mountain range that end right at ocean's edge. It's a mini Carmel to Big Sur drive for any of you that have taken that.
So I have this plan to try and get in some shooting for myself each day, mostly getting up earlier than necessary and stopping along the way somewhere along the route.
From the first day. Still in San Francisco, right off the top of Hiway 1 looking back into the Westlake District.
And from this morning....in Princeton by the Sea looking at a field of Brussel Sprouts.
oops...A75

Thanks Simon, The first shot was the 28, the second the 35. Usually when I have two cameras set up I try only to move the back from place to place. Jim
-
Gidday Jim,
Great to see you are still using your Mamiya 35mm lens.
When I got my 28mm lens I was going to sell my 35mm lens but I still think it is a superb lens so I decided to keep it.
Personally it doesn't deserve the negative criticism some photographers have slug at it.
Your second shot clearly show its talents.
Cheers

Not MF, but the type of work that has me on the MF forum thinking of it. These are from an ongoing project on seasonal change... I'm looking seriously at MF for three reasons - the more contemplative workflow (went from MF film to small-format digital, still love MF), the increased dynamic range, and finally the resolution.[attachment=8641:attachment] [attachment=8642:attachment]

Its really good to see people showing their work off and getting feedback from other photographers. I always like to see other photographers work and try to figure the lighting condition/source as well as choice of composition. Thanks to all for posting your work, here is a few of my pics taken in the last month or so.
Dean.
sorry about that. I only realized after that i never put any details. the reason it comes up with canon is because the background is shot shot with a canon. The guy on the bike is shot in studio with the Hy6 and 60-140mm zoom. I am lucky enough to have Sinar equipment at my disposal. All the other shots are also Sinar but I can remember which combination. Could be the 54H with Hasselblad V system, Sinar M with Emotion 75lv, Hy6 with emotion 75lv. i know the first second and fourth shots are done with Hy6. It is currently my favorite camera of all time.
I will try remember next time for the forum sake as i know this is of interest to some. I do my own post so from time to time you will see exif data, other times not. The bike/Buell image is 7343 X 9921 which is about 62 X 84 Cm @300 Dpi. this is possible because the background is out of focus and enlarged, while the actual bike is shot full frame 33 MP.
Apologies for the long reply but i thought more info is better than too little.

my old 4x5 Alpina. I got an adapter that has a Mamiya mount. The adapter is solid, so the body of the AFD+P25 is supported by the mount. Also the Sinar holds the weigh while allowing al the movements.
This is a good solution since I can control the depth of field of a lens like the 180mm.
One day I should get a P on eBay.
The other advantage is that you focus and compose with the reflex system of the camera and can work faster while the DB is safe. I even shoot from the computer....

I spent the past couple days at the North Rim of the Grand Canyon testing/evaluating a Cambo RS 1000 along with a P45+. The time spent was for me to see if I liked the system, could adapt to a new workflow, and more importantly capture images that would be of higher resolution and just all around better than what I've been using before (Phase 645, P30+ mainly with a Mamiya 28mm lens). Went to the North Rim in hopes of catching decent fall colors; spending the time in learning the technical aspects of shooting with a technical camera. We found that we were about a week to ten days early for the burst of colors and the sky was just plain crappy with no clouds in sight; here are samples from the past 3 days.
47mm; 10mm fall and 10mm shift either direction. I was standing right off the road shooting down into the path. f/11 @1/15 ISO 50.
two shots taken with Cambo RS 1000, P45+ and 47mm lens. ISO 50, Custom WB, f/11 @ 1/60 and 10mm shift left and right. Opened in CS3 Bridge, merged using bridge and PP in CS3.
North Rim view - f/11 @ 1/500 with 10mm fall
(http://forum.getdpi.com/gallery/files/8/6/8/cf000985.jpg)
These samples just don't do justice to the images taken then again it's hard to really tell the quality of any image in a small JPEG.
My conclusion is that this system is very good to great; in fact I'm waiting to hear back from Chris at Capture Integration has to an order status. Once the order is placed I'll be selling my 28mm lens so stay tuned!
Once again I want to thank Dave and Chris at Capture Integration (http://www.captureintegration.com)for allowing me the opportunity to have the equipment for the test.

I am planning a P45 or P45+ purchase in December or Jan. I am very interested in you experience using GND filters with the Cambo. Are you using the ground glass? Was it usable in the field to position GNDs in terms of visibility? I will be very interested in hearing how long an order will take to fulfill for that setup from CI.
I am seriously contemplating the Cambo instead of the Phamaya and Phase One back.
thanks in advance

Got up too late this morning for any personal shooting but stopped by Highway 1 in Half Moon Bay, at what the locals call Surfer's Beach. Since it's literally 30 meters from 1 and small waves a lot of surfers pop in for a few quick rides.
If you turn 90 degrees to the right you'd be looking at Mavericks which is a location for some of biggest waves in the world. Here's an account of a day with 100 foot waves.

Hi Scott
This kit was a loaner and while I would of loved to use filters I didn't. I normally use Cokin and found that I didn't have a filter ring to fit the 47mm lens. No ground glass or viewfinder; I found that I had very little problems in setting up the shot without either. While I can see the use of the Cambo RS with my landscape shots I still see me keeping my Phamaya and at lest my longer lens 75-150 and 300.
As to how long the order time is you'll have to speak with CI on that.

Hi Snook,
They were calling it paddle surfing, so I guess its technically not surfing. They basically surf the waves (with the classic surfers) while standing and using a paddle for positioning and balance.

This is a medium format digital thread. You should start a medium format film recent works thread for posting your film images.
Here are my recent P45+ shots from today.

Yesterday afternoon and this morning.
Nice.
-
The problem with this thread is the great images get watered down with the shots that look like they came from my canon point and shoot.
-
Agreed.
And I think this trend even would make some great photogs lose their will to put anymore professional works in this thread. Maybe we should start another thread called "Your daily walk around pics with MF cameras, professianal works prohibited"
And make this "recent works" thread really contain just "works", like some place we'd like to learn from and enjoy.
I don't mean to offend anybody, but I really don't think this "post my walking around photos" trend is a good sign.

Gotta Agree with Dustblue and Pixjohn.
Recent works should be shots taken for "Work" or for ones portolio, rather than happy snaps...
-
I Agree too guys, "recent works" sounded to me like a recent job you were paid to photograph. I feel like taken my images off and putting images of my brothers bachelors party. It would be far more useful in the sense that there was a budget for the shoot and that the images were shot with medium format digital with or without flash lighting. It is interesting to see what other photographers are providing the industry not what they are doing in their spare time. Also, no offense, just disappointed in the participation of professionals. Im fairly new, so i guess i learned my lesson...
-

You guys are amazing, really.
Actually, the reason I don't post here anymore is because of the quality of the comments, not the quality of the pictures.

-
No offense but I find the things I do in my spare time much more interesting. These images have lasting value if not for anyone else at least for me. Who is waiting to see shoe shots?? These things are passe within 6 months! Some clients even are really offended if I did post images of their accessories online. Many are very sensitive for espionage (I know sounds really paranoid but nonetheless it is something I get confronted with).
Now I agree, we should not just dump everything here that has come out of our cameras. I assume people are somewhat critical and put those things in here they feel are worth the effort. I enjoy some of the private works of others as well, it also shows more personality in most cases than commercial work.

And that is a shame you don't post anymore, I loved your things you put up in the first go around on this thread.
And ps. To the person who posted up the grape vines..I don't know if you did it on purpose, but they're upside down.

I don't know if I understand you correctly--if i do:I really don't know why people here tend to flattering, good manner of cause is necessary, but why flattering some obviousely crap(sorry for my English but I really cant find another better word)? I'd rather like to see some critical points, those can make people learn.

For some reason or another I feel the quality of some of the images posted is far less than what we saw in the original thread. The original thread had in my opinion very polished professional looking images and what I’ve seen here lately is nothing more than snapshots. I used to look forward to seeing new inspiring images now they’re few and far between.
Sad in a way
Just my opinion

Still a puppy (10 months today), but he's trained to stay still until he hears the "click" from my D3... still doesn't understand the composition time for film. I got some pictures today of him over a cliff today.
He won a contest for a years grooming because of a picture I snapped of him.
btw: he's a labradoodle.

Here are all those mannequins I shoot. They're really life like.
Recent campaign for rising new star that ran in two of the biggest American entertainment magazines as well as two regional entertainment magazines as a favor to the PR person and publisher. Since the shoot, i have been put on hold to shoot one of the biggest actors in the world, or at least her husband is. God, Allah, Budah and all the others willing I get it and as soon as I get clearance, I'll post it here.
I have kept silent long enough.
The tool who trolls these sites and rags is just that, a RAG. He is a uneducated, racists hillbilly who tries to say he is not a racists, but so IS. Take it from someone who hung with him for quite sometime and heard his rants.
Am I perfect, far from it. Have I had unfortunate business dealing, ABSOLUTELY as I am sure many have. Have all been taken care, ABSOLUTELY.
The guy who rags on me here is a joke at best. A guy who left Miami in disgrace cheating on his wife with a co-worker on set. Bankrupt his company in Miami and left with out paying a dime and hid away to a foreign country. Can't open so much as a bank account in the US. But relies on his wife and family for main finances.
Didn't speak to him for eight years, pretty much for the same reason. HE IS A TOOL! Emailed me for advise through the phase forums and started chatting with him again and brought him to LL. Helped him through his entire purchase of his medium format system. Had it all shipped to my studio in the US and then repackaged it and sent it to him with out any problems. Claims a missing focusing screen for a chip size I don't even own. He feels I had the need for a $150 focusing screen, but sent him his $20,000 P30 RZ/AFD II kit.
Advised him on everything and constantly bought him things to expand his career. Wanted to come visit NYC and hooked him up with a friends apartment for $75.00 per night in the heart of the West Village where rooms the size of her apartment start at $750.00 per night.
Offered him great gear at VAST discounts through my connections and packed it all shipped it down to him.
I have been absent frankly because I have been busy and would rather shoot than argue about camera and chip size.
To read his pathetic posts is quite entertaining. First swears by Phase now does nothing but slag them. GO SHOOT!
Was film perfect? FAR FROM IT! Is DIGITAL perfect? NO WAY?
My systems works for me and gives spectacular results.
Is better than film? For certain instances ABSOLUTELY!
So Michael your choice of course, but I think I have contributed kindly to this site and made as many contributions and have yet to call someone names.
I loved his rebuttal to his sand*** comment and was impressed with his back tracking. Didn't know he was that smart and quick on his feet. He meant every word of it!
As someone pointed out here. Check the DPreview forums under this STOOLS name. He ragged on everyone and anyone being racists and vile.
Over and out!
Back to shooting

Edmund he just likes to Bitch as he probably just got out on probation.
This guy was famous for ripping of peoples (including mine) credit card numbers and buying all kinds of stuff. Actually all the stuff he has.
I was kind enough to let him stay at my apartment in Miami until stuff starting missing and started getting strange credit card bills.
And he let all kinds of people stay in my house with out permission.
One time the dumb ass stole a black backdrop from me that I bought from him that I later found out he stole it... Then he FEDEX's (Stolen account) it to Paris to buy another friends friendship..
The sent me an e-mail after I went asking friends if they had seen my backdrop... He denied it.. then 3 weeks later I get an e-mail from a guy in France saying the Richard fedex it to him out of the blue..
Go figure!
The funny thing is the backdrop was HUGE.. it cost WAY more than it was worth to send it...
But he did not care because it was all stolen
Half his equipment has a MS which means Mission studio where he stole all his equipment and then Bailed to New York where he racked up all kinds of legal problems.
Easy for him to talk about me as he is just being defensive.
He supposedly was busted breaking in to a store in New York trying to steal some signed jimi hendrix or beatles memorabilia.
They even caught the moron on Video tape.
I was also e-mailed by several people in here and in other forums saying he also ripped them off when I mentioned the Prism screen.
I chose not to tear a new ass in him before but now he has what's coming to him...:+}
He just all excited because it may be the first time he has shot a picture of a living human being..
I guess he finally convinced some old modeling agency to let him shoot a test of some girl....
Oh well.
we'll see who shines out of this...
The can is open...:+}
Snook
I am in the process of getting his criminal record for further discussions...
The only probelm is that he has soo many alias... Every month he has a new name and e-mail account..

Hi Steve,
Your file has a colorsync profile of ProPhoto RGB attached, so for "non-color space-aware" browsers it will look a bit "off". Saving the file with sRGB profile should solve the problem for browsers which don't accommodate other profiles. In PS CS3 it's under the Edit menu near the bottom. "Save for Web" does it too, but I don't use that tool.
Cheers,
Dale

So where do we post images which are not commercial, but are still interesting?
Some commercial jobs are incredibly dull, whereas some personal work is fantastic. I don't think 'commercial' is really the best requirement. I do agree that some of the happy snaps which were being posted let down the quality of the thread.
I took a photo of this car in my street. It is a stitched pano made of 18 images, taken at f2.8 with an 80mm lens. This gives a pretty unique look.
Do you prefer colour or b&w?

Great shot Graham.
You are right, some personal works are great, even better than commissioned works. In fact Art Buyers and Art Directors always ask for personal works if he/she wants to know a photographer better, and on most photographers' website we can see their personal works, as a self promotion part(or not).
The problem is not about commercial or personal, it's about serious works or snap shots. It's about the quality of the pictures.
People make their own choices, and most of the time the majority rules. So if the majority like to take snap shots and like to post them here, they'll rules. The cost is the professionals leave(I think this is exactly the situation here in this thread right now).
So I start the other thread
"Recent Professional Works" (http://luminous-landscape.com/forum/index.php?showtopic=28709)
In case people want to post works in a more specific thread.
btw I always like your personal works Graham, they are very moody, and have a unique style of youself.
Sincerely
Dustblue

Dustblue,
If you want to keep the discussion on topic - ie ask people to post images - welcome. As you will see above, when certain members of the forum had a personal discussion, I asked them to just post images here. However, if you now turn round and want to designate yourself as an appointed image critic or image censor on the basis of "Rules", well then I believe you will need a mandate to do so.

wow, you are really amazing.
DO ask the pros post here, please, let's see what you can do. or just post YOUR works here, are they some kind of rotten fruit with flys around them too?
And to be clear, no one is designated as an "appointed image critic", and when a thread starter wants to have a discussion about a BMW car, then no one wanna discuss his wife's dress in that thread, this is also a hidden rule, and everyone accept it(maybe except you?)

Understand both positions and arguments. Both true from my point of view.
Why not split two threads in "commercial works" (commissioned) and "personal works".
Both can be "professional" (in "dustblues" sense of "serious") and therefore I think the title of the new thread is choosen (a bit) unfelicitous. But thus no reason to change it ;-)
(The "quality" of both the threads will depend on the quality of the pictures as well as on the quality of comments. "Nice shot!" is pleasant... but meaningless)
-
I think one good rule is the one I implemented when I started the original Recent Works thread under the screen name jpjespersen– post your images as THUMBNAILS ONLY, it seems like the people with the poorest quality images are the ones who post them the largest. Please just let LL create the thumbnail and if people think it is worthy of a click, they will do so.
-
We had a very nice thread, with plenty of interesting images, it got closed for technical reasons.
We then had a new thread whose images seem to have solicited less interest.
Now we have some self-appointed critic who take it upon himself to invoke some "Rules " (about esthetics ?) question people whether they are professional photographers and to indicate that their images are worthless. At this point a line has been crossed. Something is going wrong here, and a tradition of live and let live which we had in this forum has been breached. If somebody posts images which I find uninteresting rather than offensive, I just scroll the page, I don't try to get them barred.
Edmund

Nice shot, Graham!
I personally prefer the colour one.

Thierry
Do you prefer colour or b&w?

Love that shot Graham... is it just because we photographers are used to seeing a certain depth of field on wide angle images that makes this look like it's a little model car on a diorama... and do you think that an average passer by on the street would look at it the same way? Or am I just going a little monitor crazy here. (stitching lots of images with louvers in them and my eyes are starting to freak out)

to Thomas:
I guess your idea is good. Right now for my understanding this original recent works thread has nothing wrong except people post too many happy snap shots here---but I absolutely agree that people have the right to do so---so I think defining this thread as a personal works thread is of coz ok, but who knows if it gonna be drowned by happy snaps again.
Well I have to say "personal works" in my understanding should be serious, they are"works" anyway, should not be happy snap shots, we have zillions of happy snap shots on the internet, we better not define those as "personal works".
So, my idea about the new "recent professional works" thread is we post our serious works(be it commercial of personal) there and keep it running in a clean way, just like the original"recent works"thread posted months ago.
And make this "Recent Works IIb" as it is, absolutely free. So people still have a place to post pics whenever and whatever he/she wants.
to simplify:
I absolutely agree with you:)
BTW, all I want to do is to make this forum better, coz I like it here, please don't judge me as if I'm a selfish guy who is full of ego.
Sincerely
Dustblue

Problem is: none would post images in a thread one is not "proud of"
But if the new thread keeps rolling like started by now... you will not find too many snapshots in that thread but (hopefully) a lot of great works.

Having some fun working out a serie I started a year ago. Dreams. (It sofar only has 2 images which shows how much time I get to spend on it ) A version of one image that I feel is now halfway but still needs more work. Most of these things tend to get better when I pick them up again when some time has passed. I find it quite difficult to do while still keeping the file at about a healthy 30MP. I guess I need to put this here since it is a personal project

I have to disagree. I LOVE shooting wide open, and like you, I just picked up that 80/1.9 as well. But with such a strong and defined subject with nothing in focus at all, it just looks like an outtake. Maybe if the foreground grasses were in focus (they look close to focus, but not quite). The magenta cast in the sky is also noticeable.
Just my opinion. I like the colors alot though.

Graham,
Great shot of the car! I'm amazed I like it as much as I do given my lack of interest in the subject. All to your credit.
I much prefer the color. There seems to be much more going on in it.
Were you focused the same for all the shots? I get a vague feeling of discontinuity which adds to the interest.
Best,
Mitchell

Isn't the 80 1.9 just sweet for an old cheap gem.....:+} I love mine.
Also Graham you say the car shot is of a ?? number of photos stitched?..
What was the purpose of doing all that work for that image..
Great shot but not sure why all the stitched pictures? To have a higher resolution image?
Thanks...
Looks like this thread picked up after Dustblues insults of snapshot photography...:+]
Maybe he should have named the other thread..

Hi Steve,
Your file has a colorsync profile of ProPhoto RGB attached, so for "non-color space-aware" browsers it will look a bit "off". Saving the file with sRGB profile should solve the problem for browsers which don't accommodate other profiles. In PS CS3 it's under the Edit menu near the bottom. "Save for Web" does it too, but I don't use that tool.
Cheers,
Dale
That was the problem!!! I will try another travel snap shot....a cliche pic..Monument Valley...Hassy SWC[attachment=9007:Monument_Valley.jpg]

Yes

Yes, 18 shots.

There was lots of overlap between the images. Then I needed many shots to get a wide FOV. I could also have gone closer to the car to make the effect more extreme but I don't have a pano head so it could cause stitching issues. If I see another interesting subject I'll try to get closer and post the results.

Thanks for the explanation, Not sure I grasp it yet..
Could you not have taken the same shot with a semi wide angle and got the same effect..?
Or did you actually move around to get different perspective.
I have never fooled around with stitching except for some sudo panoramic images I have tried and then ran them through PtGui program to have them aligned correctly.
Don't want to take any more of this thread up but thanks for the information, I appreciate it.
Did you have to move on a straight line back and forth to keep everything on the same line, and if so where those movements just very little ones?? Trying to grasp the idea...:+}
Looks like you shot with larger format camera or with tilts...
Nice shot by the way...
Thanks

Graham,
was it easy for the software to stitch together
or did you do it manually?
-
Graham,

A mixture. I used PTGui for the warping, and I made alpha channels in PS. That took some time. It's a big file with 16 layers!
-
I took a photo of this car in my street. It is a stitched pano made of 18 images, taken at f2.8 with an 80mm lens. This gives a pretty unique look.
Do you prefer colour or b&w?
Definitely the B&W.
Mike.

Nicely done! Will be interesting to see the final result...
Mike.

Dustblue
Amen, I think a little editing is required. How about the one image from the series that you would like to share.

Here's a recent favourite. The shot is a bit rough and ready as I shot it in about 15 mins and spent about as long to work out + composite shot before it was used in slideshow.
Not had time to go back and do it properly.

Very Nice image..
I do not want you to take offense but in the tree line on the right side of the image there is a Dodge and Burn Path that is very noticeable where the tree line is against the sky.
Looks like when you Photomatrix it or stitched it, the program left and Obvious line that screams Post..
Beautiful image but I would get rid of that obvious post markings..

Rev, I hate to say it, but you were the start of all the previous bickering about what folks should and should not post here. Apparently that didn't sink in. I believe the end consensus was that snapshots (even if shot with your film MF camera) are not really appropriate to post here. I realize you are proud of your shots and your dog, but can you post only 1 or 2 shots that you REALLY love, not a whole slew of vacation photos?
Thanks,

Here's something I shot while on a family vacation. We spent the last 5 days in Northern Arizona and Monday visited Lower Antelope Canyon. It's alot different than Upper Antelope but just as beautiful! Also, attached are a couple of voodoo'd shots taken at the air museum in Valle, Arizona. They're images of the interior of an old Lockheed Constellation. It was at one time Douglas MacArthur's command center. Jim

Likely Korea. Only a handful of Connies were built before WWII ended.

You're correct, the plane was MacArthur's command center during the Korean War. The interior has been restored. Jim

I had assumed so, but I wasn't aware that the first "Connie" came off the line in Jan 1943..I had always thought of it as a 1950's aircraft...but if anyone could have gotten "one of the few" it would have been MacArthur.

The point others are trying to make is that these aren't "works", but "snaps". You are having fun, great, but these photos are not about pushing yourself further in your photography, nor about making something really special. You are documenting your vacations and trips, which is fine, but this kinda stuff belongs on your website, not in a "recent works" thread, which is about pushing ourselves further and achieving more. I have pages and pages of such photos on my website, and that is fine, but I wouldn't post anything here, until I felt it was really something special, until I thought that I had achieved something better than my usual standard.
In the beginning, people were trying to be nice about it, and hint that this wasn't what the thread was for, but your barrage continues unabated, and now people are getting fed up and getting rude. I would suggest that you find another place that is more suited for posting such photos, perhaps a travel photography thread or something, and keep only your very best for here.

no, those look great. I would rather you hack this site and go back and delete people's nonconstructive "complaining".
I obviously missed all the negative and hinting comments cause when I come into this thread I look for two things PHOTOS (*shocking*) and times when I see people quoting with a picture I took so I can read/reply to comments. Looking through this I see plenty of "snaps" that you call works and works that you call snaps. Your subjective snobbery seems baseless. Since I'm a big tent photographer, I'm not going to point posts out. Please, link me to a text book photo-snobbery definition of the difference between "works" and "snaps" so that I don't offend anymore. The fact of the matter is that of course I'm zealous. Think back to before you were all the immensely great and lucrative medium format photographers. back to a time when you were excited about exploring this format. I'm just picking up MF after 10 years of digital. Maybe you could have benefited from a nice community of other medium format photographers when you started out. Maybe you would have been excited. Maybe you would have posted here (if this place existed back then). The fact of the matter is that these photographs ARE pushing my boundaries. Each one of these takes more thought and foresight than any of the pictures I've had in Rolling Stone or ap. Digital, you can rattle off 11-frames a second, but with film you have to think cause each shot is money.
as for flickr, yeah.. that's what I want to deal with creative commons licensing and Getty. no thank you.

The fact of the matter is that these photographs ARE pushing my boundaries.
C'mon, some of these don't even have straight horizons, and skin tones and labradoodle fur is blown out repeatedly! How much time did you put into this, after pushing the button? I would suggest a different definition for works, versus snaps: if you print it and consider hanging it on your wall, then post it here. If you wouldn't, don't. And please post only 1 or 2 at a time, and not 6 or 8.
-

-
Revaaron.
Please accept my apologies for me earlier remark.
I am sorry it has taken me this long to apologize but this is the first chance I have been able to get back here since feeling regret much earlier.
I was going to send you a private message apologising, but felt you deserved a public apology, as my remarks may have incited others to be negative as well.
I try to live by the principle of treat others as you would like to be treated, but this time I failed miserably.
There really is no excuse for my rudeness, and I wish I had the maturity to have given you actual constructive criticism instead, as others here did.
I do feel though that you could afford to be a bit more judicious with what you post, maybe 1 or 2 of the images from your day out,
rather that what seems like every image you took - Keepers and below average shots.
It is always a good practice in business to "put your best foot forward".
But even so, there is no excuse for my earlier rudeness.
I hope you will always keep your obvious enthusiasm for photography, as it is a wonderful thing to have.
Kind regards
Andrew

I believe that he uses a Contax 645 with 45, 80 and 120mm lenses, and Kodak Portra 160 film, and scans on an Epson V500.

PS: I think Aaron has us fooled... a least a little. He has some decent shots on his portfolio website. Not much like the "snaps" he's been posting here. He's clearly at home in the metal scene, and has been published in magazines and newspapers far more than most would think.
-
ok, I will limit my pictures and not post things before they are ready. And I obviously need to get my epson fixed since the labradoodle fur seems to be an issue... weird that when I metered with my Nikon D3, the fur comes out perfect.

There are places that look a lot like that in Albany, NY... but I don't like walking around there with camera gear at night anymore.
No sh*t! I watch that show, which gang was the show about? I'm guessing, by your photos, it was FSU?
yes, the FSU. it was a show at the ICC basement in allston mass. back in 2003. just got my nikon SB-80 flash and thought I was so awesome. the pictures are so terrible. Such an intense show. The band that was there (ramallah) is the band playing on the new punisher movie trailer.

PS: I think Aaron has us fooled... a least a little. He has some decent shots on his portfolio website. Not much like the "snaps" he's been posting here. He's clearly at home in the metal scene, and has been published in magazines and newspapers far more than most would think.
The Rev Aaron, photo of his mum and a labradoodle = death metal photographer by night!

for the day shot, do you do that by hand or tonal mapping?
for the night shot, what was the illumination?
I have never used capture one, but looking at the DP piece on it, I just might like it.

Yes I did that by hand with different exposures as a base... and the rest is retouching... For the night shot: I used the available light and lit the dancer with 3 profoto flashes from different angles. Berlin is save and i think you can carry your gear everywhere unless you are very unlicky... but I love NY and never ran into trouble there, even in more shaby neighborhoods. The only thing that freaks me out as an european is that people could actually wear guns, because there are so many around. sorry, don't want to go of topic.

I felt a need to stop the car and snap this yesterday. Let's just call it "Milwaukee Gothic" ... to the curb with the Old Style and in with the new.

These are some polaroid 665 negatives taken on a polaroid 600 SE. I recently have started to dig through my negs and scan things I haven't been able to get to till now. At least the slow down is good for something...

Gidday Peter,
Welcome to LL and nice shot.
Any chance of telling how it was shot?
Cheers

Thanks Simon...
Yeah, no problem. It was made for the charter airservice company, to be printed as app. 7' x 21', so a good resolution was needed.
Made with a Kodak SLRn and a 50 mm lens, as 7 exposures in portraitformat and stitched together afterwards, followed by some Photoshop layers and masking for colour corrections.
The image just surfaced again today because the company has made a change to the board above their hangars, but it will take several weeks to get the different crafts together at this location (they are flying almost nonstop) so they have asked our retouch-wizard has to make a new board for the hangar in the image.

Nice shot. While you have your retouch-wizard on the job, ask if he can eliminate the chock under the nose wheel of OY-JPJ. It would give the illusion the jet is taxiing. But, then again, if detail in the large print does not show a pilot in the cockpit, maybe that would be bad for business.

Nice!
It even looks as if there is still air in the tires (or maybe the rubber is stiff enough from age to hold up the truck without air.

In the age of full auto this and that, Hi tech this and that, colour balance white balance and all the rest, seeing a Black & White photo is so refreshing. There is something about B/W that is timeless, you look at a B/W and it doesn't enter your mind when it might have been taken or what with, because all the colour that might give us some idea has been striped out leaving something special in its place that is hard to put into words.
I for one hope in this age of digital capture, display and printing I hope that B/W will continue to be appreciated for the special feeling that it has enjoyed over the decades and not die out due to "but look at the colur depth in the reds on this print" type of thinking.
Thank you again for sharing your shots with us.

David,
Thank You.
These were shot during a commercial project. The commerce part, was shot with all kinds of cameras, canons, phase, nikons, depending on the look, lens, amount of light, the setting and god forbid the resolution.
When I had a moment to shoot something only for myself and those moments are usually brief, I grab that little leica m8 that is set on black and white and use a 28mm lens. I don't think I've taken it off of black and white more than twice and only removed the lens the same.
There is something lovely about the leica. It's a non pixel peeping, non dr comparing, non resolution dependent type of camera. It's just lens, box and a receptor. If leica came out with an M9 tomorow with twice the resolution, or twice the anything, I'd just not care one bit. All of that stuff has nothing to do with this camera or what I use it for.
Personally I've grown somewhat weary of the digital age of new plastic covered cameras, new improvements, 40 ft. file sizes, smooth as silk skin tones, over sharpened, over detailed, over lit images that are thrown at us in a maddening pace. Actually have you ever tethered the Leica because it's so funny it's great. The main image is about 3" across and that's it, 3", which is like viewing a polaroid and about as slow.
Don't misunderstand, I'll probably buy another new digital camera someday, the 5dII and probably a RED because of the video capabilities, but if I had my way (and I completely understand the world is not going to bend to my way) I'd just carry two leicas with the same 28mm lens.
Once again, thanks for the compliment.

For Pixel Peeping. Second image is a crop from first.
I'm really enjoying this camera, and I owe a lot to this forum.
