Title: Windows, Light and Shadows
Post by: Almark on August 05, 2008, 06:10:09 pm
Hi Folks, I am new here (and I accidentally posted this in the wrong forum and was advised to post here.)

After reading George Barr's book (building on his Luminous Landscape Essays) 'Take Your Photography to the Next Level', (Amazon Link) (http://www.amazon.com/Take-Your-Photography-Next-Level/dp/1933952210) I was inspired with the section on lines and corners.  The book advises readers to review images taken a year ago and I was surprised to find that many of my successful  images had lines in the corners - but of course when I took the photos I was simply capturing what I liked the look of, at the time it was 'just right'.

So; I thought a small project was in order, to test if this approach could be reproduced and possibly increase the number of my keepers!  On the day; I did the cropping in the viewfinder, (at the time, rather than later in an editor). It took a while to get into the 'cropping in the viewfinder' approach, and with the 10-20 lens I did get my tummy and feet in a few times ;-) I just deleted them at the time.

All these photos all have lines into / away from the corners.  The photos are of the windows, light and shadows of Irish cottages, rebuilt in an open air museum at Cultra, Northern Ireland. Out of the 47 photos taken on the day I think I have 17 keepers, which I have included below.  For me, it was a successful project.  (I converted all images to mono in Capture NX2, as I thought mono was more appropriate.)

All feedback is most welcome. Clearly lines and corners are only one aspect to composition, but I would be most interested if you think the approach - has merit / was overdone / or worked OK etc.

I also have a Windows based Audio Visual (sorry no Mac version) 6MB here

(BTW; it was George's book that brought me to Luminous Landscape, and he has seen and commented privately on the above links.)
