Title: Model Release When Travelling?
Post by: Andy M on May 25, 2008, 04:26:00 pm
I'm going to be undertaking a portraiture project when I'm in Thailand in a few weeks, and though I will be shooting only for myself, I may in the future choose to use the images in a commercial sense.

What do fellow portraitists do about model releases when you go travelling? And, do you have a specific form you use (and would be willing to share)?

I keep a few blank releases in my camera bag. The problem when travelling is that the subject might not be able to speak or read English, so it would be ideal to have a version in the local language.

Here's the body text of the release I use. I also have my address info, as well as space for the model's contact info.

Heh, just noticed I haven't updated it to digital age

I also prefer portraiture over other topics while travelling. But never bother with release forms. Come to think of it, I don't bother with them at home either. In addition to the language challenge, there is also the need to get the adults' consent when photographing children. If the image captures a large crowd, the problem ballons. Last but not least, asking for release forms may raise unwarranted curiosity/suspicion or request for payments, etc.

Having said that, I recall the following book includes sample release forms. Perhaps even in different languages. But don't hold me to it.
