Title: Apple Sued over display quality
Post by: 4ER5pKqRYaEbOcqv on April 04, 2008, 01:15:48 am
As Apple products are widely used for image processing,
I thought this worth mention.

http://hardware.slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=08/04/01/1710221 (http://hardware.slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=08/04/01/1710221)

Apparently the (also timewize) dithering of the 6-bits-per-color-channel
Twisted Nematic LCD panels is good enough that it's only an issue if you
make your living working with color.

Is there any way to prove this is real? If not, move on. This has been done to death.

Why so skeptical? This is not the first time Apple is facing a class action suit on grossly false advertising on # of screen colors:

Why so skeptical?

Are you kidding me? This is the internet.

If I don't see a ".gov" or a ".edu" as part of the url, I'm always skeptical.

Yeah, because government never lie to their citizens, and universities are the paragon of objective thought.

Apple has a well-documented and widely reported decline in quality of products, is unresponsive to customer complaints, and censors their own forums when the above is brought to their attention.

Of the six new G5s we got a couple years ago: 2 dead on arrival, 1 dead six months later (repaired and sent back with malfunctioning USB ports). Now, my scroll wheel on my mouse has ceased to work in the up direction. Very disappointing indeed.

75% of Apple users that I know have had to take machines back. Not had any problems with mine yet bar Finder losing one of my HDs. Though PCs can be crappy too. But at least they don't promise the Earth.
As for the mouse issue. That's why the ball was removed from the base and replaced by a laser, because it used to clog up with fluff. So putting one on top is really not a smart move.

Over what time frame?

Yep, the 6-bit panel issue.

What I find funny is the number of people that complain that Apple's $699, 8 bit-per-pixel Cinema Displays are grossly overpriced compared to those you can get from Dell, HP, etc., that come in at $299 to $499.  HOW CAN APPLE CHARGE SO MUCH?!

So Apple comes out with the 20" iMac that uses a 6 bit-per-pixel TN panel (which everyone else uses at this price point) and people cry bloody murder.  HOW COULD THEY?!

Damned if you do, Damned if you don't.

BTW, the 24" iMac uses an 8 bit panel.  If you want color accuracy (and a decent sized screen) get that.

I'm a bit curious though who's leading the class action now that Milberg and Lerach are both doing time in a federal pound-me-in-the-ass prison for their corrupt class action suits, though.

I've had 10-12 Macs since 1983 and never had to send one back. I've been amazed at the consistent quality.

Anyway, it would be kind from Apple to write anything about 6 bit TN panel in iMac tech specs, don't you think? It's harder and harder to find any important and reliable information about hardware, and personally - I don't like that trend.

My old G4 had to go in for repairs 6 months after I got it. Both the mother board and the logic board were replaced (they said) and that was years ago and no problems since.

My new Mac Pro ... 2 weeks old is in for repairs and so far, they can't figure out what is wrong. hopefully in a few days it'll be figured out and repaired.
This entails a 190 mile round trip to the repair people!

It seems that their quality control sucks but once it is fixed, it works fine there after.

I still prefer one to the Dell  that runs my mat cutter.

OT: Is it a mighty mouse? If so wet a soft cloth with rubbing alcohol flip the mouse over and roll the scrolling ball over the damp cloth. Apple has a tutorial somewhere - it has been a problem for me but constant cleaning can bring the track ball back to life. jeff

Question: if you take a cheap 6-bit panel and calibrate it with a good hardware-based calibration tool won't it look good enough?

Regards,
Luis

The display will exibit banding that isn't present in the actual image. It can be quite annoying.

Here's a weird Mac-ism that I found out only after I toted my iMac into the Apple store, where a "genius" actually diagnosed and fixed the problem in 1 second.

My problem was, the screen was completely washed out with some important programs, like Word. Some of the icons were so broken up (white), that you couldn't make them out at all. I'd looked for solutions on the net, tried everything suggested, and finally took it into the store.

As it happens, if you want to change the appearance of the screen, you go to Preferences, then Displays. However, if you want to change the *contrast* of the screen, it's not there, but it's down under "Universal Access," which is meant to deal with a variety of vision problems and other handicaps. Sometimes, apparently, the iMacs ship with the contrast pushed to the high end. I don't know why that slider wouldn't be under Displays, but it's not.

If your screen seems washed-out, check the contrast under Universal Access.

Actually most of the problems occurred almost immediatly.
One MacPro went back within first week, another had laptop problems from the get go, I cannot remember the rest - didn't bother taking notes. But Apple have had a lot of problems with gear, yet they keep that very, very quiet. Hard drive issues with laptop and display problems with imacs are two things I can think of off hand. Batteries with laptops and iPods too. And yes I know lots of people had Laptop battery issues a while back and Apple were also caught in that disaster IIRC.
Actually, my brand new Mac Pro's DVD player sounds like a jet engine taking off. Last time I had that noise, the drive was very flaky and caused no end of problems. Not had time to take it back yet.

I always used IBM hard drives for their consistent quality and speed. Then they brought out the DeathStar [I had 3 die on me]  and never bought one again. IBM sold up the HD business not long after that debacle.
You may have had good stuff, but maybe we get different quality control in UK? To go along with our more expensive prices!

Oh and when the MacAir came out, I went to have a play and 3 in a row completely locked up when I enabled the trackpad gestures. So that's consistency of sorts!
