Title: "NEC won't ship until fall"
Post by: Andrews on March 27, 2008, 06:19:05 pm
Hello all,
I've had an NEC 2690SV on order from MacMall since I saw it at MacWorld a couple of months ago. I received a call yesterday telling me that, according to NEC, the ship date has been pushed back again until fall 2008. After a huge amount of research to find the right monitor for me, it's really disappointing. Does anyone have any further info before I start looking for something else? Thanks.

We've had 3 on order for the past 3 or 4 months. Supposedly they're being FedEx'd tomorrow but I've heard that before .

I bought mine earlier this year from Amazon, this is the version without the SpectraView II software and colorimeter.  But you can buy those directly from NEC.

The 2690 was (and is) in stock and I had it 2 days later.

I did the same thing as Paul.  I also had trouble finding the monitor and SV bundled together (and in stock) from anywhere reputable, so I had an email conversation with someone at NEC customer service who confirmed that buying the monitor and SV separately would work just as well, then got the monitor from amazon and SV from the NEC web site.  It all worked perfectly.

I also contacted my man deep inside of NEC who said the same (just get em separately).

I just got the NEC 2690 from Amazon. Shipped in 2 days--as did the SpectraView II software I bought from the NEC web store. You should definitely pick 'em up separately instead of waiting for the bundle.

Thanks so much for all your replies. Seems that purchasing separately is the way to go, although I'll lose my $100 discount from the NEC Macworld booth. Come to think of it, the higher cost of buying the hardware and software separately as opposed to bundled seems to be the only logical explanation for the abundance of non bundled displays versus the lack of bundled displays.

In Europe Spectraview version is selected when manufactured, and supplied with profiler, a hood (that falls off after short period of time), and a "Spectraview optimised" sticker on a box. Thanks to the manufacturers selection SV are supposed to have a better backlight. Aren't US Spectras selected?

Different software product for one. Otherwise, same hardware.

If anyone is still looking, I got a 2690 with Spectraview from PC Connections for $1321.  They had a special with free ground shipping. It took 3 days from Texas to Maryland. I dont know if the free shipping is still available.

I went to the NEC site and it listed recommended retailers. (Advertisers?) PC Conection had it in stock and with the best price.  I previously had a local store order it about 2 months ago and it never showed up.  (So much for trying to support my local dealer.)

Apparently they went quickly. I just went to their site and they say they are "on order".

I received my LCD3090wqxi last week after ordering it from MacMall in February. They are just now coming into the country, it seems, so I imagine the 26" version is on its way, too.

It's WORTH THE WAIT!!

This thing is gorgeous and it has a wealth of on-screen controls to fine tune after calibrating. Now, in a perfect world, calibrating, using SV II or any other good software, would be all one needs to do. I've always wanted to tweak my Cinema Display but could do nothing more than turn the brightness down. On the NEC, after using SV II and an eyeOne, I used the on-screen controls to fine tune it and now, with soft proofing in Photoshop, I'm getting the closest screen matches to my prints from an Epson 9800 using ImagePrint software that I've ever had.

Although I had an initial sync problem with my Dual Intel Mac desktop machine, I got superb tech support by email and phone and that problem is now fixed.

So, I'm glad I had the patience to wait it out. You will be, too, when the 26" version ships.

Since I see this post is still active (I'm the OP), I should state that my 2690SV did ship, and I'm very happy with it. My only concern about calibration with the Spectra View software is that setting the monitor brightness becomes a judgement call. When I calibrated my old LaCie CRT's with Monaco software, the monitor brightness was properly adjusted during the process. I'm making a manual adjustment in intensity that approximates my old LaCie's and printer output.
