Title: "PHOTO Techniques" Magazine?
Post by: dwdallam on March 27, 2008, 02:13:37 am
Is "Photo Techniques" a respectable magazine? I've tried others that I was REALLY disappointed with, such as Digital Pro and American Photo. I found them rather trite with over emphasis on advertising and other photographer's success stories, and minimal essays on improving photography or inspiring photography.

I find Photo Techniques to be an excellent magazine....not all articles can be interesting to all (It does carry a fair number of film processing techniques), But - it is very technical for those who want to understand curves, chemicals and all other geeky stuff....

Photo Techniques is a respectable magazine, yes.  It really used to be more focused on film (largely black & white film), and used to be called "Darkroom Techniques" magazine but that sorta went out the window with the whole digital thing :-)

There are still articles written by a couple former Kodak chemical engineers so there's still a fair bit of yammering about developing negatives and making prints and tricks for dealing with negatives that were improperly exposed -- gasp these days almost an anachronism.

But I find it an interesting read.  Magazines are pretty small (about 40 pages now), and their subscriber base is pretty small (~25,000), but they're hardly crap like Popular Photography.

It's about the best magazine at least in the U.S. addressing technique, from Photoshop to conventional darkroom to exposure. It also has intelligent reviews of gear, more honest than PopPhoto et al. Their recent reviews of large format printers for example were pretty good. It does tend to be a bit thin, and one wonders about their longevity, but it's a lot more to the point than all the gear-crazy glossies.

In addition to the technical content, the commentary on artistic considerations from Vestal is superb.
