It's a very nicely taken image, but for me, the short DoF doesn't work here. The whole idea of the shot is that the eye follows the log, but focusing on the middle section makes the eye jump right to it instead of following the texture of the bark smoothly from one side to the other.

If there was something on the log at that point - a squirrel or a bird, it might help, but as it is there's nothing to be seen at that point.

It's interesting...the shot has a different effect on me.
When I look at it there is something at the point you're refering to.
The branch creates the illusion of a bird sitting there.
I guess that illusion doesn't work for everyone but that's how I feel about it.

I like it a lot. That branch really does look like a bird. I like the almost symmetretrical composition with enough variety to make it interesting.

I like the tones. That bird like branch is extraordinary. Maybe stopping down some more would make the DOF transition less abrupt?
