Hello to all,new to this forum but a regular visitor to the Luminus Landscape site .I have volunteered to help take a photo invantory of flora and fona of a local rather large river estuary.The project will be spread over all four seasons . Has anyone ever taken on a project like this?I like to do a good job no matter what it is I do and like to ask questions so I can be as informed as I can be, any tutalage along the way is always appreciated.I shoot a Nikon D50 mostly with a Sigma 28-300 may be looking for a longer lens any suggestions? That's a pretty open question. You mentioned flora and fauna, but those are both big categories. Are you simply shooting for inventory, in which case all you need are some reasonably sharp, focused pictures with even lighting, or are you making scenic images? By flora are you simply referring to flowers of herbaceous plants or are you shooting everything from mosses and lichens to trees? Fauna in an estuary can include everything from aquatic invertebrates to large mammals, songbirds, reptiles, amphibians...
Depending on what you're photographing you may need close-up equipment, a lighting tent or diffuser for the flower shots or a blind for shooting images of waterfowl.
Once you get started you'll likely develop more specific questions, and there are many here who will be able to give you more specific answers...

Thanks for your reply wolfnowl we will be gathering as much information about the estuary that we can within the time frame alloted .It's not a scientific study but more a project to let people know how important Estuaries are .I will be involved with the land based portion only, the river will be done by another group better equiped to handle the water, just got the instructions to build a light tent from another site today.The lens I have does a good job will go with that for now .I will definately use this forum to help me through this project.
