Title: Epson 4000 vs 4800 question

Hi

I am debating whether to upgrade my printer. I am currently useing the Epson 4000 and Imageprint RIP. I am wondering if anyone can comment on the difference in image quality between the 4000 and the 4800 or 4880.

The inks on the 4800 are better, except for matte black , which is the same. The 4880 has improved the magenta further, giving extended blue/magenta/red gamut.
The better inks are more linear , have a better gamut and less colour constancy failure. With a light light black highlight tones are smoother, especially in B&W.
The 4880 has other mechanical improvements but we have not seen too many of them yet.
The only real advantage of the 4000 is it can change photo black to matte black without completely flushing out lines.
The 4880 is the go, especially if you don't need to change blacks much. There is not much point getting a 4800 now unless it is real cheap.

Do you know what the upgrade for Imageprint will cost? I'd look into that, too.

Thanks for the info. Sounds like it would be a worthwhile upgrade. I guess now I will have to decide whether to go with the 4880 or the 7880. I already have upgraded to the new version of Imageprint although I don't know if I would do so again. It is an excellent program although the new version seems to have a few bugs. I bought it originaly to benifit from their excellent profiles and not so much for the features of the rip. Now most paper companies provide pretty good profiles and companies like Pixelgenius are going to be providing custom profiles for the new Epson paper so it is something I will have to think about.

As someone who owns both (4000 and 4800), the new inks and the new driver's ABW mode translate into a significant upgrade. But having to switch blacks inks on the 4800 is a significant downgrade that really ticked me off. Consider an Epson 3800 or Canon 5x00 if black ink switching would be a hassle for you.

Puzzled...!
The vivid magenta and vivd light magenta are indeed different however all the other inks are the same as the 4800.

So I have to ask Brian what he means by this i]'The inks on the 4800 are better, except for matte black' and 'With a light light black highlight tones are smoother, especially in B&W.'

All the other cartridges are exactly the same, same T number etc... so how can the light light black differ?

He was speaking in comparison to the 4000.
