Title: Gitzo GT2540LVL with Leveling Coloumn - pictures?
Post by: Thomas Krüger on September 12, 2007, 05:27:38 am
I'm looking for a tripod for my backpack and found the new Gitzo GT2540LVL with Leveling Coloumn:
Gitzo website http://tinylink.com/?wewroaDBjC (http://tinylink.com/?wewroaDBjC)
B&H http://tinylink.com/?qJP03fovT0 (http://tinylink.com/?qJP03fovT0)

What about the levelling mechanism, anybody has a detailed picture or work experience with this tripod?
My workload is a pano head (1.1 kg) with a Canon 5Dm the heaviest lenses are a f4/24-105 or a f4/80-200, or a Wista 45RF.

Right now I'm using a Manfrotto 755MDeVe tripod with a leveling coloumn, so I could update to a Manfrotto MA 055MF4 magFIBER and mount the levelling coloumn of my old tripod.
B&H http://tinylink.com/?TkXCmKtVLV (http://tinylink.com/?TkXCmKtVLV)

But I think the price and quality classes between the two solutions seems to be quite different.

From memory Michael R. talks about the leveling mechanism in one of his very early LL video journals. He only had good things to say about it. I think it was issue 8 from memory.

I bought one about 4 or 5 months ago and love it. I have been shooting a lot of panoramas and the leveling feature is a real time saver. It saves time on single shots too. I'll probably never purchase a non leveling tripod again. Good quality, fairly light.

I don't this is the same leveling base, MR was talking about, though, he must have covered most good equipment here.

I bought the 1321 leveling base, based on his review, but the one pictured above is from one of the newer Gitzo's which has a sort of buildin leveling base, not sure if it gives your the same flexibility, but definately it is a lighter version.

Well, I bought mine, and its always attached to my 1548 legs, but I must admit, I don't use it as much as I had thought. It was originally to help me leveling my camera up when trying to make images for stitching.

I have the Gitzo Mountaineer 1228LVL for Panorama work and it holds a 5D with 17-40L at 110mm offset on the Novoflex VR Pro mount without any problems.

The LVL series are very sturdy and the centre column can be removed and replaced with a short stub mount to increase stability.

The build quality is exceptional and the rotational rigidity at the crown is much improved over my Manfrotto 055. The price is quite substantial with tripod and Novoflex head combined costing over £1000!

I love the leveling column. It makes fine composition adjustments much more convenient than messing with the head itself. Well worth the extra weight (1/2 pound or so).
