Nice image, Michael, I wish you´d post more of that sort of thing. Whilst you´re at it, perhaps some yarns from your pro photo days to lighten the soul?

Loved the one with the hat - so Sarah Moon! Or even David Hamilton, come to think of it... hmmm. Perhaps we´d best not go there!
Do you have any preference, really, for one sort of photography over another or are they all the same insofar as the buzz?

My original career back in the late 60's was as a photojournalist. This style of shooting was my first love. (see my pieces in early Video Journals about street shooting.
I've done every type of photography over the years (except weddings). The past ten years have been devoted mainly the landscape and nature, which is my current passion. But I do documentary and street shooting whenever I can.
For example, on my trip to the Amazon earlier this year the bulk of my best work was documentary rather than landscape. And next month I'll be shooting for two weeks in Madagascar and expect the same to happen.

Careers can be funny things. I started in industrial because at the end of the 50s and early 60s there was no way to get into pro photography that I could see. I´d started in a mech.eng. apprenticeship and when, after much trying, an opportunity came along to get into the company´s photo-unit, I took it.
Years later, when I got my own wee act together I had to do anything I could find just to stay open. I did about five weddings, fairly downmarket ones, having no reputation at the time, but my dreams were always about fashion. One damp, gloomy Glasgow day, I found myself standing on some dreary church steps waiting for a couple to arrive for their event. I shall never forget: my mind was going everywhere but towards the job in hand; one of the thoughts that hit me was about David Bailey, who already had a Roller at the time. I thought: how would I feel if he were to drive past in it and see this poor young guy doing what I was doing, knowing that HIS job was what I wanted? That was my very last wedding. Nunca mas, terminado! I decided that anything was better than that.
I think you have to self-inflict kicks up the ass like that in life. Moves the spirit, pushes one onwards.
But other guys love the job; takes all kinds.

Hey! So David Bailey is one of those guys who contributed significantly to the greenhouse effect .
Okay! A bit under the belt.
Michael's preview of the 40D was quite illuminating. We now have a contest between the 40D and the 5D. I sure hope this will be resolved some time in the near future by Canon's announcement of a 5D MkII which will have prospective buyers of the 1Ds3 in a complete quandary.

Rob,
I was referring to the buggy, not the caviar he might have eaten. Those Rolls Royces consume a heck of a lot of petrol per mile, not to mention all the greenhouse gasses emitted during their manufacture .

I'm in a quandary:) I have a 5D and would like a second body, but the 1Ds3 seems a bit too expensive and the 40D doesn't add anything for me (speed and more reach for the long lenses aren't that important to me).
Perhaps a 5D2 with the 1DS3 sensor/DAC etc and a lower price would be good. However,I expect that Canon will launch with 16 or 17Mp and lower noise etc. Need to differentiate the 1Ds...

I know exactly what you mean. A 1Ds3 would give you about the same resolution as the 20D for the given fov, but I expect it costs more than a 5D2 and a 40D together will. At the moment I occasionally borrow a 20D to act as a support camera to my 5D and I have to admit that it's quite amusing with the 70-300 DO on it!
I sometimes think back to my previous film days (which were more cash limited) when I had an AE-1 for someting over 25 years together with 28, 50 and 85 mm lenses and (very briefly) a pair of Hoya telephotos (135 and 200mm) that fell apart on a long African holiday. How times change!
