Title: Unsupported File Format Problem
Post by: brucepercy1 on August 07, 2007, 06:12:27 am
Hi,

I've been using Aperture for just over a week now, and feel it is really growing on me. Great management of photos. With one huge set back.... I keep getting 'Unsupported File Format' from time to time. Never with RAW (Canon 5D), but with my PSD files.

I've looked on google, and there are loads of people complaining about this, but Apple are silent.

I've done several things:

1) Rebuild Projects at start up holding the Option/Apple keys. But it just sits there and never completes
2) Rebuild Project per Project.

Interestingly, when I have a file that comes up with the dreaded 'unsupported file format ' error, I can open it in an external app such as Photoshop via Aperture, and save the new version, which doesn't contain the error message, but the original file does.

This appears to be some form of library database corruption. I know they had issues with RAW support for different cameras, but this is PSD files.

Any ideas?

Did you originally save them with maximize compatibility? Try resaving one with this option.

BTW, enjoyed looking through your web site but you should check your grammar - on Iceland "laid back attitude of it’s people" should be "its". "Ansel Adams work" should be "Ansel Adams's work", and "Torness' landscape" should be "Torness's landscape".

Hi John,

Ocht, my girlfriend is always checking my grammar and says it's awful !

Thanks for letting me know. I'll get her to fix it for me ;-)

Re Photoshop max compatibility - good idea - I'll check this out. Thanks.

John,

Saving as max compatibility in PS didn't help.

In fact, it appears that Aperture is flaky to say the least..... the images are actually fine, but each time I start it up, it says some images that were fine are no longer fine, and others that weren't fine, are now fine. It's completely random what it chooses to decide is an 'unsupported file format'.

What I think it really bad about the whole thing is that if allows you to import files, and then decides to tell you the format is unsupported. I think the error message is completely misleading. The images are supported - you can open them up by launching PS from within Aperture and do work on them - no problem, but Aperture from time to time decides to give up trying to create previews for them.

I think if you leave your files in LAB space you will get that message. Could that be the problem?
