I just heard from Mamiya rep in Taiwan that the firewire problem with ZD is not in the camera or in the cable - it is in the way the cable is positioned: if cable is circled, the camera stops working in firewire mode, once cable is straightened, everything should work fine! I will try it with cable which came with ZD.
On the other hand, I have used a firewire cable, purchased from cablestogo, when shooting tethered with Fuji S3. That cable has no magnets at the ends. Cable was literally abused, tangled, detangled, wrapped around the camera mounting gear, etc. and it still lives and never gave me any problems.
I suppose Mamiya's cable has bad shielding, so it interferes with itself. Circles of cable create inductive coils which behave like electromagnets and are susseptible to intereference.

in the last while, I used a different make of cable - and I always wrap it (slightly) round the camera or tripodhead for support and I only had a lost connection one time (in months).

That's not what I was told, my firewire connection got lost for a second time the day I tried a different firewire cable ( a right angled one I wanted to use to fit a macbook pro bag). This time I told my dealer to force the distributor to talk with factory. They said they have recognized this error and that new units are shipping corrected. This week is arriving the new one (from factory). It happens that last time they changed the camera for another one they have in stock here in Spain, so basically it suffered the same problem. One thing I know for sure, I won't change the mamiya cable for any other unless it crashes for himself. I have used the cables a lot of times circled without problems but it won't hurt to be careful too.
