Title: Who's Down w/ a 1Ds M3?
Post by: dabreeze on March 19, 2007, 08:22:30 pm
Well, now that Photokina & PMA have come and gone with no upgrade to one of the oldest (and still most venerable) cameras in the Canon DSLR line (1Ds M2), my questions are thus:

a) Would Canon, in their 20th anniversary year, with the world of sports and photo journalists collectively salivating over the marvelous upgraded 1D M3, actually let the entire year go by and not announce the 1Ds M3 until '08? Or will it come in August as some are now predicting?

With the significant new features of the 1D M3 serving as a preview (dust removal system, double digic 3 processors, faster frame rate & larger buffer, lithium-ion battery, 14 bit processing, improved AF, dedicated MLU control) combined with the likely increase to 22 megapixels & other probable ammenities like adustable HDR bracketing, etc. is this enough for you to upgrade your 1Ds M2s or 5Ds at the logical price point of $8K?

c) Michael, now that you're medium format, P45'd to the hilt, are you excited over the prospect of the M3 and do you see yourself buying one if and when it's announced?

Well, somebody needs to start some unfounded rumors, so it might as well be me.

I predict (based on nothing except what my ouija board tells me) that the 1DsMkIII will be announced officially on August 19. It will have 49 megapixels, a 60-frame buffer, five separate mirror lockup buttons (to make up for past Canon errors), will sell for $2499 (U.S. Dollars) and weigh in at slightly under thirty pounds.

OK, Canon, prove me wrong!

The design platform of modern EOS camera was carried from the late Canon T90, designed by German, and still work/look much similar today. If one used the camera for so long time, eventually get so used to and operate it at second nature. It is quite proven, and consistent from one generation to another, contrary to Nikon's contant change from F2 thru F5. The F6 is finally a lot closer to F5.
I think Canon has said it clear on their white paper, the 1D MK3 is their new flagship in EOS line, but of course a newer pro model will take such position, may be a 1Ds MK3 which might be intorduced this year. I do not know Canon, but I suspect 1Ds MK3 to introduce later this year, and perhaps a tune up for the 1D MK3n in time for 2008 Olympic.  I think 1Ds MK3 have more time to tweak since there is no immediate competitor, a 5D successor seemed to be more urgently needed, as well as the 30D.

My prediction is that it will have an auto-composition function, complete with composition-stabilisers and inertia locks so that you can't physically take a poorly composed picture!

On the other hand, perhaps Canon will simply announce an equivalent upgrade to the 1DMkII/III (ie a few more MPixels and a useful redesign of other features) together with some new designs of ultra wide with decent corners on FF. This would be very nice indeed.

Pagani is doing the carbon fiber work, so it should be light as well....

While the 0 - 120 MPH time will be impressive, the 120 - 0 MPH will be even more so, requiring a special tripod inertial socket insert ...

The camera will be available not before Novemember 2007. The 1DsII will probably still be the camera for Christmas 2007 presents.

1DsIII in March 2008.

No need to do it earlier.

Canon only needs a 3 month lead time from a final design to full production. Right now, there's no competition. The only thing that might alter that would be a huge surprise in the MF price offering of one competent MFR. However, I doubt we'll see it yet!

Since last year, the 10MP 1DIII went from 12 BIT to 14BIT.

By delaying implemetation of the new 1Ds flagship, Canon can deliver a far better product.

I heard rumors that there would be a 21MP product announced this summer. But of course, they're just rumors ...

Yes there were, AFAIK at least 2 models, a 21MM and a 24 MP as of June 2006.

People were still testing models in December 2006.

Not all the models come to market. Each time they may be testing another part of the system. Just part of the overall optimizing process. As far as I'm concerned, the longer this goes on is better as once they decide to green light the project, most everything has to be frozen except the firmware perhaps. Given the new Pentax 645 appears to be a 4 figure priced toy, the 1DsIII better have great pixels! I'd rather see 21MP if it means better pixels. Since they would both come out at the same time, I'd imagine the 1DsIII will have a lower price.

I couldn't be in more agreement - I'll take 21MP with better dynamic range, less noise, etc. over 24MP with reversed attributes.

Wow! Finally some folks actually took me up on what i thought was a credibly worded original query about people's expectations for the 1DsM3 given the significant upgrade of the 1DM3. Thanks.

Frankly, I'd be amazed if they waited until 2008 to release the new flagship considering that would be approaching four years (!) since the 1DsM2, considerably longer the two year product cycle of the first two 1Ds models.

Sure, there's no competition but as others have pointed out, Pentax, Mamiya ZD, heavily rumored Nikon FF . . . can real competition be that far off?

With a bit of input from Mercedes Benz Diesel and the camera will last forever.

Yep, I said it las year around september that 1Ds mk3 cameras were already being tested out in the field. They actually looked like 1Dmk2N's. I was expecting Canon to realease it during Photokina, when they didnt I was certain that during PMA they would introduce it. They didnt. Guess gotta thank Nikon for that one for not offering a competing model. We got shafted. At least Canon couldve released a 1DSmk2N with  a larger LCD.

The results... three 1D cameras (1Dmk2, 1Dmk2n, 1Dmk3)....only one Ds model (1Dsmk2), seems disproportionate if you ask me.

From what I've heard the entire dSLR range will be updated this year. I'd be expecting the 1Ds MkIII to be announced around October, with availability before the end of the year.

That's my expectation anyway!

Given the option--and what I mainly shoot--I'd be hard pressed to pick the 1Ds3 over moving to a digital back. With prices falling in the MFDB market--now (and in the future) it will just make sense to move up. I love the ease of use and quality build but the file nore lenses will never compare to what's out on the MFDB market.
I think the 1Ds2 does more than I'll ever know or use. I just want a great file to work with. Not saying that they aren't good now, but I want better gradation and detail and DR for that matter.
And to be honest I think there are a lot more photogs like me. Thinking that though the 1Ds3 will be very nice it won't compare (especially if you think about the lenses).

Just in yesterday from a very reliable source about the 1ds3:

Canon wanted to announce it in Feb with the 1d3 but ran into issues with image quality.
Canon needed more time to figure out if it was the lenses or the camera itself at the root of the problem.  They are working to get it resolved for a fall announcement.

Looking forward to it-

Can't a guy hope and dream??? Sigh.

Besides, it's an academic improvement anyway ...  I'm sure they'll sell the body if it's not the problem.

Here's the body, lens at 11 ...
