I bought a SIGMA 70-300 F4-5.6 APO MACRO for my duaghter for her to use on her Canon EOS 350D.
When the lens was put on the camera it came up with ERROR 99.
So, I tried the lens on my Canon EOS1D MKII and it works fine.
Then I put the lens onto the 350 again but not all the way. Switched on the camera and fully locked the lens in. This time it worked, auto focus, no problem. But, when I tried to take a photo the shutter operated and then ERROR 99 appeared. Switching the camera on and off has no effect, niether does removing the battery, memory card etc and re-inserting them.
If I do the above so that the lens operates on the camera, but do not press the shutter, and then switch the camera off and on, ERROR 99 appears.
I have cleaned all contacts, and all other lenses I have work on the 350D.
Thought it might be a firmware problem, checked that and it has 1.0.3, which after searching the internet seems to be the latest version.
Any ideas on this problem would be very much appreciated.

That error 99 usually occurs when it tries to tell the lens to stop down and the lens can't do it. So it works fine. You hit the shutter, the lens goes "what?" and the camera does the err 99 thing. Did you try stopping the lens down with the 1D mk ii?
The lens needs to be "rechipped". If that is possible for that model. It was my understanding that the original version of that lens is not compatible with newer canons.

Error 99 seems to cover a variety of things. I have a 20D which proved to have a power circuit problem shown as an Error 99 (probably from using a non-Canon battery I suspect - be warned).

Paul is correct and I should have noted that there are a lot of other reasons to get an err 99. But in this case it is pretty likely the sigma lens.

If you have a lens 70-300mm F4-5,6 APO Makro Super until serial number #4... you have to send the lens back to Sigma for a chip upgrade (24 Euro in Germany).

it happens if communication fails with the lens. try to clean the contacts.

Thanks for all of the replies, I have emailed Sigma to see if the upgrade is possible and the cost

This was a painful first: I threw an old Canon EOS mount Sigma 24mm into the trash yesterday. Optically, the lens was quite good, but it would not properly communicate with newer Canon EOS models, and the black finish on it was disintegrating. It felt sticky, and the black paint was coming off on my hands. I won't try to sell junk on Ebay. So, sadly, this Sigma is now where it belongs.
