Title: Leica M8 + Grayscale conversion

Hello,

when I use Lightroom to convert my M8 DNG files
into b/w and adjust the grayscale mix colours,
on some greater adjustments a very coarse noise
shows up.

I loved to tone down the blue sky to an almost black
sky with other cameras (Canon 1xx) but apparently
this is not so "noiseless" with the M8.

Does it have anything to do with the IR issue?

Any ways to outmaneuver this in Lightroom (or an-
other app)?

Hi

try some of the calibration presets on [a href=\"http://inside-lightroom.com/cal.html]Inside Lightroom[/url]Inside Lightroom - there are some Leica m8 specific ones.

Also turn the sharpen to 0 - you may be getting some sensor mosaicing

Hi Concorde,

I let a thread here about the same topic few days ago. See the thread:Chromatic noise effect in B/W with LR (http://luminous-landscape.com/forum/index.php?showtopic=15179)

Few people seem to be interested in it, even if I've posted on several forums, except an Adobe engineer on Pixmantec forum. As far as I've clear idea on the topic, the noise comes from the fact that, WHATEVER the tool for B&W conversion, we change differentially the colour layers (typically RGB) and AS A CONSEQUENCE, the color noise reduction in greyscale is MANDATORY. That was OK with LR B4, and not anymore with LR V1.0!!

Being a fan of B&W, I investigated (temporary) solutions with LR in waiting for an update from Adobe. The only one that could face to that problem consists in using the color mode and desaturate: classical way until here. Then you can use the WB & camera calibration as a raw greyscale mixer (range smaller than the greyscale mode). In that case, the noise is really tiny.

Hello Alain,

Merci for your response, I agree with you. Thanks for
the link - your pictures don´t seem to be noisy in
comparison to mine from the M8 - I guess its a problem
with the sensor and the lack of the IR filter.

A software problem can be possible too....anyway I try
to work around it with similar procedures.

I suspect that the sensor may be involved in the level of that particular noise just regarding its size:

you said that your M8 (x1.3) is more noisy that my 5D (FF), but it's probably less than my coolpix (2/3"). IMO, There's an evident lack from LR V1.0. Don't think LR bothers me,  except that issue, I really enjoy LR for B&W work.

Please, leave me more details if you can collect new informations: M8 or LR issue? I'm really interested in that "chroma noise" in B&W.
