Title: Import files - changes image
Post by: O.S. on February 26, 2007, 06:52:43 pm
guys - having a problem with Lightroom where I import the raw files and when I look at them at first they appear to be contrasty and saturate as I like them, I also see the (WORKING) message. After the (WORKING) goes away the files become dull and loses the punch. The install is default and I changed nothing.
tell me what is it?

thanks

I have had the same results..my library has a good mix .....CR2 Raw (canon 5d),  DNG (Leica DMR and M8) , D-LUX 2 Raw and Jpeg .. Less contrast and saturation than Beta 4.1.

The first image you see is the Embedded Preview, created from the camera settings. The second one is rendered from the RAW, based on the settings you had in the Develop Preset section of Import. The best way to get the look you want is to create a Develop Preset yourself that looks the way you want and to apply this on import instead of the current setting. Have fun!

Thanks for the info Sean, I had been wondering that myself.  On that topic, do you know of anywhere online that camera settings and their equilvalent in LR or anything along those lines?

I've a blog post about this linked to the Nikonions site, where they have a preset..

On the U2U forums, someone posted a Canon 'Standard' Picture Style preset, but I can't locate it tight now.

This doesn t sound good ..I have about 7000 images in my library..from 5 different cameras .  They are mostly referenced in place   ..so I have the raw files on an extrenal hard drive.   sounds like I have two choices (1) find a suitable preset and apply it to all the images ..one shoot at a time.. or (2) delete the Lightroom shoot..but not the raw images and reload the shoot using the presets .   Is there anyway to preserve the camera settings ?  I don t notice much of a change with my .CR2 (canon ) files but the Leica .DNG s are much less saturated and less contrast.

There's no way to keep the camera settings Glen. At least not in Lightroom.
You can batch apply a preset to your already imported images in the Grid using Preset in the Quick Develop. This way you don't need to reimport.

You can use the Metadata Browser in the Library modeul to select photos based on your camera models (ie all photos taken with a Leica M8) and then apply a preset (home-cooked?) to the selected photos. Far from ideal, I admit.
