Title: Need tip on workflow
Post by: Eirik R on February 22, 2007, 04:23:31 pm
I am working on a Mac, and this is what I want to do:

Copy images to a folder named From Camera. No problem

Then review images in that folder and delete unwanted images. Which program? Freeware maybe?

Then copy my CR2 files to an archive folder. I dont want my CR2s to be part of LR Library.

Then import images as DNG from From Camera to a folder that will be part of LR Library.

My problem here is that i don´t want my CR2s to be part of the LR Library, so I don´t want to use LR to do the deletion.

Any suggestions on how solve this?

Hope you understand what I´m asking.

Couldn't you do all of that from the Finder?

I´m new on Mac and I can´t find a way to see a large preview in the Finder. I want to see large previews so that i´m able to see what images are keepers, so that I can delete the others before I import to LR.

In 10.4's Icon View mode you can zoom up to 128 pixels in the view options for the window. You can also control click on a group of files and have it display a slideshow/contact sheet sort of interface. This doesn't let you delete things directly, but you can add them to an iPhoto library as a temporary holding tank prior to DNG conversion.

10.5 should improve upon all of these things, but for preliminary weeding I think the present implementation is adequate if you don't want to do it with Lightroom for some reason (and I'm not 100% sure what that reason is exactly as you don't have to copy any files anywhere to add them to Lightroom and you can yank the entire collection out pretty quickly once you're done with them anyway).

I shoot about 35g per year and use several firewire drives for my data.
On drive one I store my raw images for the current year.
On drive two I store the original images from previous years as well as the location for a backupup of drive one
On drive three is my LR library which are converted DNG images.

My process is to download my memory card to drive one using LR Import. My folder structure is yyyymmdd and the individual photo are renamed yyyymmdd-xxx.cr. At the same time I make a copy to my LR Library using the same structure.

The final step is using LR/Library/Convert to convert the raw files in my LR Library to .dng files. I do not save the .cr files in the LR Library and only after this step to I eliminate bad photos, assign rankings and keywords.

Each month I also backup the current month and store off site.

Hi wayfarer,

The more I think about it, the more I think that separate HD's are the way to go. Like your setup.

And of course, back up, back up & back up.

Eirik,

-You can choose to keep the CR2s in the folder you want (i create a folder with Time stamp and Name of the thema before importing) having juste the reference in the library

-for me the best way i to to make the editing under LR, by editing i mean to set the "star" and to try some settings to see the result of a potential picture

-after selecting the best pictures, i delete the obvious blured or bad framed (unfortunatly i have a few ;-)

-i delete the really so - so pictures from LR or from Bridge (who manage the rate from LR and vice versa, several weeks after.
