Title: New System needed?
Post by: KeithR on February 20, 2007, 08:11:43 pm
I have been using a pentium 4 w/2.40 Ghz and 1gig of ram running XP Pro for over 3 years . I use PS CS2 and will be uprading to PS CS3 when it comes out. I am planing on getting Lightroom now that it is out. At some point, maybe this spring or summer, I was thinking of upgrading the system and getting a faster system w/duo core 2, Vista, availabilty of more ram and larger hd. I'm sure that this has been discussed before, but now that LR has been released, I'm getting more serious about what I might have to have "under the hood" as it were. As for a video card, I am only looking for photo editing purposes. Any recommendations as to what I should put on my shopping list? I don't know if I would build from scratch(my son-in-law want me to) or go with something from Dell or such, and just make modifications as I see fit.

I am in the same situation, I am looking at maybe changing to Apple Mac Pro, a PC with the same spec as the Mac Pro is more expensive than the Mac, but I dont know if one really need all that processing power. I know you can run Windows applications on the Mac but am not sure exactly how well they will perform. I anyone is running a Mac Pro  with Windows your comments will be appreciated.

If you wait until late summer AMD will have true quad-core chips available at mainstream prices.  Their solution will be tops until Intel comes out with their chip closer to Christmas.  AMD's will have 4 processors on 1 die, instead of 2 dual-cores in a multi-chip package.  I am in a similar position as you, I have a AMD 3500 single core with only 768 mb of RAM.  I am waiting until late summer even though I'd really like to upgrade now.

Also, I think Photoshop CS3 is supposed to be faster on the same systems as CS2 is running on now, so you might be able to hold off.

If you do want to build your own system [a href=\"http://arstechnica.com/index.ars]http://arstechnica.com/index.ars[/url] is a great resource.  They update their recommended build-your-own systems each quarter:

Just for reference, Lightroom is running just fine on my P4 3GHz, 3GB RAM system.   But I have the same concerns when CS3 eventually comes out.
