Welcome Graham!

The following changes apply to the firmware 4.45:

1. The display quality of the image histogram has been improved.
2. The menus on the Sinarback eMotion display are now also available in Korean.
3. A problem that occasionally caused image artifacts when storing images on CF cards has been solved.

Best regards,
Thierry

I am having a bit of trouble installing the firmware update. Previous upgrades seemed straightforward. I am on version 4.42 at the moment (eMotion 22).
I download the file to the desktop where it lands in a folder called 503_0_sbe_fw_445, which contains a txt file and a dmg file. The dmg file opens to a disk image on the desktop called firmware, but I don't seem to be able to do anything with it.

hi David,

Yes, when you download the file you get the folder named "503_0_sbe_fw_445".

In this folder you then have:

- the "eMotion_Firmware445 ReadMe.txt" Read Me file: includes all the information you need to know about for this particular firmware update

AND

- A file called "Firmware445.dmg": this contains, in a compressed way the actual firmeware: you have to double-click it and then it expends and mounts a "disk" on your desktop called "Firmware": inside you have the firmware file called "Sinarback-eMotion-Firmware-Update".

If you don't arrive at this point: you should re-try to download, because most probably the file has been corrupted during download.

To load the new firmware to your eMotion:

- Connect the eMotion to your Mac via Firewire cable
- Start the eMotion by pressing the "Power" knob
- Double-click the file "Sinarback-eMotion-Firmware-Update":

A window should nw automatically open, giving you the current firmware of your eMotio and asking you to "update" by clicking the button.

IMPORTANT REMARKS: pls. read carefully

a. In case of connection problems

It might happen that your eMotion does not connect with your 10m FW cable: this is due to less voltage provided by the FW-ports on the recent and newest Macs (in particular the MacBook Pro's, Intel or Power-PC AND the latest iMacs, on which even one port might work and the other not).
--> the solution to this:

- put always a battery inside your eMotion (partially or totaly charged)

AND/OR

- use a shorter FW cable (Sinar provides one of 4.5m)

b. Apple BUG with the OSX.4.8 INTEL of the MacBook Pro computers

A Bug recognized by Apple makes it impossible to update the firmware of the eMotion when using a MacBook Pro with Intel Processors and with OSX 4.8.

Non-Intel Macs with OSX 4.8. DO NOT have this problem, as well as any other OSX version, Intel or not.
Mac has announced a bug fixed with the next OS Update to come for Intel Macs.

WORKAROUND: like myself, use another Mac (with Power PC inside) or ANY other version of OSX Intel

I hope this answers and do not hesitate to contact me again in case of still having difficulties to update your eMotion.

Best regards,
Thierry

Thanks for the detailed & fast response Thierry.
I get to the part where you connect the firewire cable  and it appears the updater does not see the back (with a fresh battery). I have done updates previously with the 10m cable, should it be any different this time? I am running a G5 tower 1.8DP.

Thanks Thierry
No its not an intel machine, but it is running OS 10.4.8. It does connect with captureshop, as I do a lot of tethered shooting.
I don't know if its related, but I have been having some slight captureshop problems at the moment. It is not automatically saving raws and opening them into Contact Sheet. When the images appear on screen they are called "preview" and I have to manually save the raws. I am running Captureshop 5.4.2. I tried reinstalling captureshop but nothing changed. When I run the e22 tethered to my Macbook also using 5.4.2 it operates correctly.

regards
David

Nothing to Thank! We are trying, although I am at the end f my "knowledge" right now.

What I can say, is that both issues are not related: yu are saying that if you shoot tethered on your Tower Mac, then the images are saved as "Previews"??? In this case you are certainly shooting in "Preview" Mode ---> go to the "Toolbox" window and check if there is a "P" set. If yes, then it means that you ae shooting in very low res "Previews" ---> just click the pull-down menu and select 1-shot mode. In my opinion this is the one issue. Untethered the eMotion shoots automatically full- (or 1/2 Resolution, depending on your setting) files, and not possible to shoot previews. If this is not the problem, then let me know.

Now for the update: may I first suggest to take and try another firewire cable first, although I am not sure if it will change anything? And to make things comletely sure, cold you please try by re-downloading the file from our webpage? It is still possibe that something is corrupted: it happened to me as well in a previous occasion. Could you also let me know which is the current Firmware you have in your eMotion (as well as the FPGA ---> indicates shortly when you power the back, in the welcome window in the bottom right side)?

Then I suggest to give me your direct contacts (email) and I will submit this to our tech dpt. at Sinar: they will stat working in 1 hour time.

Would that be alright for you?

Thanks and best regards,
thierry

Thanks Thierry for the fix on the Preview option. It works fine now. I must have accidentally activated that option.
I will email in regards to the firmware update. Thanks for your interest, the firmware upgrade may have to wait a while if it means a new cable.

cheers
