Title: Photography Blogging
Post by: HowardG on February 02, 2007, 07:47:24 pm
I recently started a photoblog that I think (hope) is a bit different than a lot of what is 'out there'.  If anyone cares to take a look I would certainly appreciate any feedback offered.  It can be found at:

Thanks.

I don't know how I missed this one.  I'll have to give it a closer look when I have time.

Howard,
I find your blog quite interesting and make it one of the photography-related sites that I regularly visit. I also like that I have found a number of other good sites via your blog.

I was taking a look at the forum trying to decide if I should register when I came across your message. I've read the three posts on Art & Fear, and that on printing on matte paper, and must say I found them very interesting and well written. I visit many photoblogs and often long for something besides the pictures, as you give in your blog. Have no doubts I will visit you often.

If you don't mind me asking. What drives you to blog? Is is the expression, or is there a business reason as well. I keep thinking that I would like to start a blog for my nature photography, but haven't found the time. I would be more motivated to make the time, if I knew it might help me sell more of my work.

Thanks.

Oronet and drichi...thanks very much for the kind words, I am glad you find it interesting.  It is hard to know how to let people know that a new endeavor like my blog exists, especially since I am a 'photographic nobody'.  There is always the 'danger' that when posting the information on a forum that it gets viewed as 'spam' and I'm glad that people haven't taken it as such and that they have taken  a look at what I am doing and taken the time to give feedback.  It is very much appreciated.

mwookie....what drives me to blog?  Good question...I am still trying to figure that out!  I know it isn't to sell more of my work.  I don't make my living in photography and sell maybe two or three thousand dollars of my work a year.....that isn't what is putting food on the table.  Since I have a lot of other time constraints, if anything, it takes time away from doing photography in the active sense of making prints etc.

I can tell you some of the reasons I do it.  First as a means of expression.  Second, as a challenge. A challenge to think of a topic and write on it.  Also as a challenge because I never thought of myself as being able to write particularly well and I wanted to try and see if I could write anything that someone else might actually take time to read.  Thirdly, because it definitely helps to organize one's thoughts.  Fourthly, I have ended up e-mailing and corresponding with some absolutely delightful people that I have 'met' from my blog and others.

But it takes an effort.  If the sole reason you are considering it is to sell some of your work, I personally would advise against it.  If you don't 'really' want to do it or feel like you are going to put something into it in order to make it something different from the tons of other photo blogs out there you might actually end up detracting from your work.  Also, I have never actually sold a piece of work from the internet, not that others haven't, but whatever I have sold has been local, from people seeing my work in person and wanting to buy it.

I think you have to really want to do it for reasons other than sales.  That said, I might not be the guy to ask as I am not making a living in photography, I just have a passion for it!
