Title: Looking past 1.0
Post by: ErikKaffehr on January 23, 2007, 01:48:47 am
Hi,

As far as I understand Lightroom 1.0 is really around the door now. I think that we all have ideas about needs in future versions, so I would like to start some discussion about what we could ask for in later releases.

My wishlist:

1) Dust elimination using dust mask.
2) Some scripting like facility so you can tell Lightroom to do certain edits in Photoshop. I don't mind using Photoshop for improving the picture, but then I decide to do some new edit in lightroom, so I need to do the same retouching in Photoshop again.
3) I would like to be able to adjust the development panel so it fits my workflow. I would very much to be able to put cropping at the top of the panel.
4) I can do different crops using "history->add". What I would like to have would be the option to save multiple "edits", so I could have some cropping for 16x9 aspect ration and some other for 5x4. Slide show should have an option to pick the best cropping for the geometry used. I often generate a Slideshow for LCD TV and another for PC.

Best regards

Erik

Why not wait a short while and see what 1.0 actually has to offer.

I think you'll be pleased.

I forgot, wasn't LR supposed to be released about now? What's the date the beta expires?

I heard the 29th.  I *think* at engadget but I could be wrong as could they.

Of course we'll wait for V1.0 but from what George J has said I'm quite confident in adding the following requests to the list.

Soft proofing
Dual monitor support
Support for laptop/desktop synchronization

Meta data support is improved i.e. writing it out to JPEGs and for proprietary RAW files, but I hope that on import the full meta data assortment is taken like lens, flash and other shoot info.

The team have done a great job in bringing as much as they have to V1.0 but those 3 items would be really nice in Vx.

One unrealistic wish for the future.  Nikon, Nx and Adobe to put their heads together and offer full DNG support or at least for Camera Raw to find a way of using the Capture NX presets.  Lightroom is a great product but it does present a challenge to Nikon users.  Capture NX makes a better initial RAW conversion - Arguable I know but I'm very confident any statistically significant poll would back up that statement -thus saving a lot of time in post.  Combine that with the unique control point technology and you have two great features.  Unfortunately that's where the comparison ends.  Lightroom is superior in almost every other way.  It's a tough choice.

I hate to break it to you but it has been said already that there will be no soft proofing or dual monitor support in V1.0. I know the amount of requests features has put it in the forefront of Adobes mind, along with better sharpening and noise reduction, but again not for the pending release.

No softproofing?  That would make Lightroom kind of useless for printing, wouldn't it?

Kind hard to decide between renderings without it. I find printing to be good still, but I'd still prefer to know what exactly will be coming out when I print.

Sean I confirmed what you just said about softproofing with a trip to Adobe's
Lightroom forums [a href=\"http://www.adobe.com/cfusion/webforums/forum/messageview.cfm?catid=590&threadid=1208498]http://www.adobe.com/cfusion/webforums/for...hreadid=1208498[/url] .
I guess I'll be doing my printing from Photoshop then.  I always softproof before
printing to decide between rendering intents.  It seems pretty necessary.
