Title: Epson 2400 or 3800
Post by: matt4626 on January 13, 2007, 04:09:35 pm
My Epson 2200 has started to print really washed out color and contast. No changes to hardware of profiles. I've tried all new inks, double checked all setting etc and no luck. I have been planning on a new printer so this may be the time. I don't print every day so would I have any problem with the larger 3800 ink carts. going bad (like out off date)? If yes I may have to buy a 2400. Advise welcome.

Matt
I was in the same circumstances. 2100 not printing anymore and to expensive to repair, I also print not daily but 2 or 3 times a week but then ±10 prints a day. I also are a way from home some times for 8 weeks and never had a problem, a cleaning cycle and off you go!
I decided for the 3800 because off the better price per ml ink. Price per ml is 1/3 off 2400 and the convenience off having the possibility of 17” printing when appropriate. It also fitted perfectly on the 2100 spot!
Great printer.  A specially for B&W. On Ilford  Galerie Smooth Gloss it produces a D Max off 2.35!! And on my favourite Epson EM lovely colors.
Hope this will help in your decision.

I will say I'm really very happy with my 3800 coming from a 2200 (had since the month they came out).  My 2200 is still printing just fine and I'll use it for some jobs, but I'm so happy with the K3 inks--esp. for monos without using ABW (though some like it very much--I like my own toned prints done WYSIWYG, as Jack Flesher says).  The printer is operating nicely--as did my 2200 in fact--and I've done a great number of sample prints on various papers establishing which fine art(s) and luster papers I will use--as I did withi the 2200 and 1280.

Saying that, depending upon if you want a 13" or 17"---others are happy with the HP9180 also---and I understand that Canon will have theri 13" pigment print ready in 2007.

Oh--and--for 2200 printers---no metamerism for all practical purposes and almost no GD, and if you adjust your white/whites--none.  Can you tell I'm really happy with the printer  *smile*.

If you are already an Epson user, the 3800 is a no brainer. The driver has similar functionality, so you can get up and going right away. I really love mine, I've been using Epson's since 1998. That's why I went with it, I know their menus and controls inside and out. With custom profiles, botique papers like Innova FibaPrint F look dead-neutral in B&W, and I am satisfied with color and B&W on Epson papers as well.

Sure, maybe one day I will own an HP or a Canon, but this one does what I need it to do.
