Title: Hahn. Fine Art Pearl for color
Post by: NikosR on December 05, 2006, 07:20:26 am
Has anybody experimented seriously with Hahnenmuehle Fine Art Pearl for printing colour photographs?

It seems that most everybody (certainly the reviews I have read) are talking about using these sort of papers (i.e. HFAP, Silver Rag, Innova etc)  for printing B&W.

I would be interested if anybody would have any comments for color printing. I would be interested in trying this paper for printing color wildlife photos with Epson K3 (PK) inks. Comparison to fine-art matte and lustre RC papers would be useful.

The Fine Art Pearl is really in a category of its own. While it does not necessarily perform any better than papers like Premium Luster (in terms of d-max, color gamut, etc) it does retain some of the characteristics of a fine art media. It performs much better than the best of the matte medias.

I use it for color quite frequently (as well as B&W) when I want vibrant color and snappy blacks, but want something a little more distinguished than Premium Luster. I think the best thing you could do is buy a small box or a few sample sheets and try it yourself. I use the Premium Semigloss setting with an ICC profile of my own creation.

Thanks Eric.

This use was what I had in mind. In fact it is for a collection of exotic bird photos where I think the intense colors would benefit vs. matte fine art papers.

How would you compare bronzing and gloss dif. vs the Premium Luster paper?

Have you tried spraying HFA with a protective spray? What's the effect of that on gloss appearance and gloss dif.?
