Title: Good news on the Hy6 front.

It is confirmed that the Hy6 camera will hit the street in April. Annual production should be aroud 1500 units, presold to Jenoptik and Leaf channels if I understand rightly (and where is Phase ?)

As I have a rep as a muckraker  I would like to say that I saw the company CEO at Photokina, and he told me then he would be tooling up right after the show. It would seem that this train is still on schedule. Let's just hope the first samples do not have some Leica-like issues.

My own wish would be for decent AF with non-center spots. Let's see how it goes.

I'll definitely be buying a body (or two).

Since I own nine Rollei lenses and an eMotion 22 I'd be mad not to...

Has there been any mention yet of expected retail price?  This sounds like an amazing system but I'm hoping that it falls within my price range.

Yes, 3800 euro according to one German magazine.

Hi
I heard about this camera in May this year from a Sinar/Leaf dealer. As far as Phase goes have they signed an agreement with Sinar? Or is that why Phase is doing a special with Mamiya at the moment. I just went to the Hasselblad H3D39 launch here in Sydney and this company knows how to market, at the moment they are the only MFD company to have a 28mm lens on the market. Next year will be interesting.

Hasselblad is certainly on the right track.
Mamiya has a 28 as well?
When Rollei sells enough more dedicated wides will come available.

The only reason why Hasselblad has the 28(29) is that it only covers the sensor and not the 645 format.
It is also heavily correct with the software.

Rollei however, has to design their wides to cover the 6x6 format as they will have a 120 filmback
for the Hy6.

I believe there is a 35 mm lens in the making that will cover the full 120 film format.

Personally ,for the extreme wide stuff I use a dedicated  shift camera with Rodenstock Digital lenses.

I will purchase the Hy6 as I'm in the process of buying an eMotion-75.

Cheers,
Willem.

Is that for the body only or with a standard lens?

I watched the video on the page linked and I was surprised at how the camera is handled. Is the shutter button on the bottom of the grip? I'm trying to picture how I'd hold the camera and just contorting my wrist to that position feels like carpal tunnel waiting to happen.

What the hell is carpal tunnel?

BTW, The grip can be rotated in 3 click-stop positions.

This camera is very well researched and If the production line is 3500 units per year,I'm sure they all will sell!

Cheers,
Willem.

Mamiya has a 28 as well?
Quote
Hi
Yes Mamiya has a 28mm coming out in the 1st Q of 2007 that will work on film backs or be a 32mm on digital backs. Mamiya has been working on this lens for a long time plus they have a 75-150 zoom coming. I have heard that Phase is going to make software to correct stuff ( ?) on the Mamiya 28mm lens like what Hasselblad is doing with there 28mm lens. The one thing I like about Mamiya & Rollie is that there design can handle a true FF MFD chip if it comes out. Remember we were using 24x36mm chips in 2001 then in 2003 Leaf announced the Valeo 22 the chip size that is the standard today ( plus a few mils with the Kodax chip). who knows Rollie could go to a full 6x6 chip in the future? Only time will tell?
Thanks Denis

the shutter is right where you want it, at your fingertip...the handle rotates, no carpel tunnel at all, the opposite, it is hard to shoot anything else after holding the 6008, sorry Hy6, ....and don't forget: no turning the camera, just turn the back....what a concept....

seems like this is right on track....the only question still left is: what is the deafening silence from phase regarding the Hy6 all about? are they really thinking about not supporting it? that would seems like a very un-phase like stubborn move....i don't see what or how they would gain from that at all....i guess time will tell....

They say they are making 1500 a year initially.

Certainly the fact that the shutter is in the lens is good news, because you just send in a lens for repair when the shutter says adios. I believe backs and even bodies are very robust.

Hasselblads H3D can use a film back in 645 format, yet the 28mm will then not "cover it..." You have to use the 35 mm to get the full potential for film.

Rollei could do the same, make some lenses only for the smaller digital chip to work around this. Hasselblad denotes this as HCD lenses for digital, and HC lenses for both film and digital.

i really don't see rollei (i know it is F&H which is owned by jena) leaving phase out on purpose...why would they? maybe leaf wanted to be exclusive? or at least exclude phase?
i think it is strange that we haven't heard anything either way....it is very obvious that rollei simply builds the cameras to fit the backs, so there is no reason not to make a phase adapter....loking at the pictures it seems like all backs (even film) will be attached via some adapter, like the adapter for the 6008 holding the (rotating) 4560 film backs, which are also shown in the latest pics. so maybe there will be adapters for all existing phase backs, even mamiya, H1, contax? ok, someone wake me up, i am dreaming......

leaving phase out on purpose...why would they?

They need each other, so I expect it is just a matter of time before we hear something.

Hi
Could Leaf & Sinar lock out Phase. I heard about this Leaf camera back in May this year. Now Jenoptik has signed a deal with LEAF in the past month. Is that why Phase has been talking to Mamiya? The one advantage is that Phase/Mamiya could bring, is a very attractive entry price point. Look at the P20/AFDII offer. After all Leaf & Phase are in competing with each other.
Thanks Denis

Locking out, or exclusivity, which is what I think we're really talking about here, can always be attained. All you need is lots and lots of $$$. I think perhaps Leaf bought themselves some up front semi-exclusive time. None of these players could afford exclusivity over the long term. Nor would that necessarily be a wise move. Regardless, I expect Phase to be in there at some point. I think the more intriguing question is whether Hasselblad will be.

I have a question(s)

What back mount will it be? Rollei?
And with the shutter in the lens no sync ceiling?
I am very nervous of the route that hasselblad is taking.

Correct, flash sync at all shutter speeds.
See the brochure posted elsewhere in this forum.

That will last a bit longer. I heard from a Mamiya rep here in Tokyo yesterday that the actual release date of their 28 would be announced during the camera show next March in Tokyo. Meaning an actual availability sometime late spring probbaly.

It looks like Hassy has a 6 months lead.

Cheers,
Bernard

I see, that would explain how one would remove the back in landscape and replace it in portrait (does not rotate). I know of no other mount that does this.

You can remove the back and have it portrait/landscape if it's a Sinar eMotion on the Rollei 6008 series cameras.

I do it all the time.

RZ, RB & GX680; Leaf backs (and some others) rotate on these cameras, just like a film back.

The Arca Rotaslide adapter allows to rotate the back as well.

Be careful of quick answers.

Yes the RZ will rotate but it's useability with the leaf depends on the original mount.

I believe if you go from the mamiya 645 mount to the RZ adpater Leaf supports that but they do not support the H-1 to RZ adpapter from Hong Kong.

Before investing in any of these specialized systems, get all the information up front and in writing from the dealer or the manufacturer.

Find out shoot rate, if you have to wait for the back to beep before shooting, if it takes added cables, or even dual cable releases.

Making it work is one thing, but making it work continuously and stable is quite another.

Same with tethering, software and processing, to make sure the workflow is exactly up to your own type of production.

I know a lot of photographers and techs who have used or tried to use the RZ with a multiple number of backs and most seem to have issues.

Always find out how it works in your real world enviornment.
