The "banana" bit took a while to be recognised!
AFAIK, both of us still live abroad, and so might be somewhat out of touch beyond media experience. However, I have it as personal belief from many still resident there (within the skin) that it is indeed the case about the old place.
Some go as far to tell me that should Scotland ever become independent, there would be a sign at the southern border pleading for the last person out to kindly extinguish the lights.
Yet, and yet... if I do go back, at least I know I would never have to buckle down to varnishing any more goddam shutters. Of course, Brexit is just a cynical ploy intended to prevent a mass exodus to France, Spain and Portugal in the event of eventual chaos in the Goode Oldie UK. Deprived of free, reciprocal medical care, who could afford it anymore? Even the bloody taxis on this island are often new Mercedes. The preemptive trap will have been well and truly sprung!
