Title: Sensor banding noise with Canon 5D MK IV
Post by: robertDthomas on July 04, 2018, 10:02:26 pm
I have used the camera this week to shoot fireworks. In Lightroom I have noticed a distinct green band of noise on all the images when I have pulled up the shadows and exposure. I am generally shooting at ISO  100 to 250, and 5 to 8 seconds exposure. This band runs completely across the frame and is at about 10% from the edge. I have shot over 5000 images with this camera and although none of this type needing significant pull up of both shadows and exposure I have never noticed any banding with other images.  I tried this with Long Exposure Noise Reduction on Auto as well as off and same result.

Has anyone else seen this.  I have one of the first MK IV's as I took my delivery from B&H on Sept 8, 2016.

I have attached an Image I shot at ISO 100, 8 Sec exposure and in LR pulled up the Exposure +2.5 and Shadows up +53 with Highlights down -80

May I make a suggestion ?

Have you tried making some exposures with the lens cap on (manual exposure  ;D) and then pulling-up the exposure and shadows sliders in Lightroom to see if the band is still there ?

If it is there this would seem to suggest there is something amiss with the sensor.  If not, this would suggest there was something peculiar to the venue where you were shooting.

Thanks for your reply.  Yes I did the test you suggested prior to posting but thought the fireworks shot would be more typical but with the lens cap test I also saw the band.  So I agree as you say this points to the sensor.  I have looked through the images I have taken over the past year and a half with this camera and I have not shot this type of scene with these settings with a several second exposure that required pulling up the exposure and shadows so I have not noticed till now.  But if I did the lens cap test I believe I would have seen.

I too have noticed this issue, and posted (http://forum.luminous-landscape.com/index.php?topic=114607.msg944130#msg944130) about it here a while back. I also noticed that Canon's DPP software removed these bands. The issue arises when you take exposures beyond about 1/2 second, at or near base ISO. Some lighting scenarios this issue is more apparent. When I brought this issue to Canon's attention, they did not ever care to get back to me about it, even though it shows up in a second body I tried.

Thanks for the post and I looked at your original posting and this is similar to what I see when I take a lens cap image for noise test with multi-second exposures.  Only difference is that I do see lines of noise but the green line is much thicker and more pronounced.  I ran this lens cap test at ISO 8000 and at ISO 250 just to see if there was any difference.  I imported the images into LR to see when the banding begins.   I tested the following shutter speeds 1/30, .5, 1, 2, 3.2, 5, 10 , & 20 seconds.  When I brought into LR I really cranked up the exposure as well as shadow and black adjustment to their max to more easily see the banding.  When testing at 8000 ISO it became visible only at the longest exposure of 20 sec.  Yes, there was a lot of noise pumping up the images but the green line only showed up clearly at that exposure.  What is really interesting was at ISO 250.  The band was more pronounced and visible at all exposure times greater than 1 second.  I also checked using Canons DPP and still saw the noise lines.

Hi Robert, When I told Canon, they did not have any interest in following up with me. Perhaps you may find a more sympathetic ear at Canon, as this issue should be addressed by them. The reviews at the time of release of the 5dm4 touted a DR increase, but I don't think they tested longer(ish) exposures, at low ISO where this issue crops up.

Well it is occurring with at least three samples. After I originally discovered the issue, I went digging through the prominent online reviews for raw files to attempt to replicate this issue from the reviewed camera and could not find any raws that had the appropriate parameters that most illicit this bad behavior. Camera reviews can only test so much.

Yes your other samples clearly show this issue.  I agree that reviews probably would not catch this as they do not test all conditions.  I have also posted this on the dpReview site and seems there are a reasonable number of folks who have discovered this.  One poster sent his camera back twice.  1st time it was returned and checked and reported to be within spec.  Sent in a second time and they made some adjustment to the electronics.  I may send in but I have a shoot scheduled for next week not with these parameters so I will wait and post results once I hear from Canon.
