That’s an incredible shot! The light, the gestures, the almost surreal scenes! It reminds me of an art work, but can’t remember which one right now. Breugel-esque, perhaps?

P.S. The first person to remark how this is a “street” without a street will be forever banished to a special place in photographic Hell

P.P.S. The “serious” photographer’s hand gesture is earily similar to the God touching Adam fresco by Michelangelo.

Ha! I like the guy with the camera/phone. I can't imagine he got a decent exposure of the sunset.

It is a very clever photograph.

Beyond the content, it tells me again of the futility of that kind of photography (the subject's photography, not Bob's). All those poor people, being pushed this way and that, and to what end? The little girl in the group seems to understand, and find Bob of far greater interest.

In a way, though silenty and without the music, it reminds me of the closing scene of La Dolce Vita, with the young girl waving and mouthing inaudibly to Marcello across the little gulf between them... only in the latter case it was early morning.

This is an instance of a photograph speaking to a viewer, but mainly because it resonated with something the viewer already has implanted, indelibly, in his memory bank. Without that, for me, it would be a pretty evening picture in pretty light, of some people down the beach, two of them saddled with what appears to be the burden of making happy snaps, either with too much gear or with the minimum.

That's why I think it a clever photograph: it works on several levels. And there the problem, too, with photography if we think of it in terms of having a life beyond the photographer's own imagination: it requires input from an audience in order to gain a wider validity.

A wonderful shot, Bob. It's also quite Martin Paar-ish.

But with just a little tenderness...

I dunno, Rob. I guess I see more tenderness in Paar's work than you see there. Some of it is cruel, but a lot of it isn't. Some of it's even a bit on the tender side.

Excellent. I like the young man in the background: is he struggling to get the right pic mode on his phone? Or just checking e-mail and missing the sunset?

...  it requires input from an audience in order to gain a wider validity.

As every single piece of art ever created does.

Is that guy really shooting against the sun with an on-camera flash? ;)

Yes, why not?

Damn! How did I not think of it last night? Not art work, but artist! This is what the scene would have been illustrated today by the great Norman Rockwell!

...a slice of life with a bit of humor.

Lovely.

For some reason it puts me in mind of Jack Vettriano.

Yes, Vettriano sprang to my mind as well.

I don't think Parr has a mean bone in his body. I have heard him talk twice and visited his place in Bristol where he was 'in conversation with ...' and each time the warmth of humanity shone through.

I know I have said it before but I fear those who find his shots cruel perhaps take that with them when they view. As far as I can work it out he as often as not offers you a chance to assess and judge a human situation. How you do so is down to you. But, whatever, we disagree on this. I don't find any of his work cruel in itself but others do, whatever :)

Mike

He's in conversation David Hurn soon. That'll be 8 quid well spent.

Yes, you're right! Quite forgot about him.
