Title: DataColor Spyder 5 Elite Rebate scam!
Post by: JakeD on April 17, 2018, 07:48:31 pm
Just wondering if anyone else experienced a problem with DataColor's 'Cashback' offer on the Spyder Pro 5 Elite. I took advantage of it last September, with the promise of a $180 refund. The submission forms said 'Please allow 8 to 10 weeks for processing from the time your submission is received'. I mailed them to them on 19th. September 2017. Not having received or heard anything by January this year, I contacted the rebate company - 'status-now.com' and they claimed that they hadn't received my claim forms, so I was too late. The woman on the phone actually said, 'Problem is, you probably haven't got copies!' WRONG! I keep copies of everything. I re-sent them to the company as requested by them. After chasing them up a number of times since, a woman stated that they've decided to honour the rebate commitment, but that I'd have to wait four weeks for my money.  Well, it's now mid-April and I'm still waiting for my money. Another call to the company today informed me that 'my application is in the system'. When I asked what that meant, I was told I'd have to wait another four weeks whilst it's being processed. I can't help feeling conned by a company - DataColor' who I thought could be considered reputable. I'm still not sure if I'm going to get my money. I'm posting this too see if anyone else has experienced this problem and also to warn others of how this 'scam' seems to work!  >:(

Have you tried contacting DataColor directly?  I certainly would.

In my dealings with DataColor they have been a great company to deal with.  Many times these rebates are farmed out to third-party fulfillment companies and they may not even be aware you are having an issue.  You should contact DataColor and let them know what happened.

I purchased the V5 on behalf of my local Camera Club on the last day the rebate offer was valid. Submitted the documents and received the rebate as specified.

This was in Canada and the rebate request was sent to a third party Canadian company fulfilling the rebate. I had some concerns because after submitting found the website listed did not show my documents as being received, and the 800 number did not work. (Probably they were US specific website and 800 number)

With your duplicate documents as verification you should have enough leverage eventually get your money, but not quickly.

This problem used to be more common and even the big manufacturers have gotten caught up in it.  Manufacturer offers a rebate, farms it out to a third party, third party enrichens themselves by skimming a certain percentage of the rebates and paying it to themselves.  Most will forget, others won't fight it when they tell you they didn't receive it or their was a problem and the offer is now over, etc.  Some rebate companies were actually pushed out of business.  They are scamming both the consumer and the manufacturer.  It even happened to Canon about 15 years ago.  Your recourse is to contact Datacolor directly and explain the situation.  It is in their best interest to make things right with you.

Thanks all for your interest and replies. I have to say, I posted this out of frustration having been banging my head against the wall with the rebate company for so long. I had tried contacting DataColor on a couple of occasions but never seemed to get any reply from them. After posting this, I found the DataColor Canada support email address and wrote to them. They dealt with the problem promptly by contacting the rebate company. DataColor inform me that the rebate company say they mailed out my cheque the day before. :-) I'm really not a complainer, but things with this issue were beginning to give me doubts about ever getting my money back. DataColor dealt with the situation satisfactorily, but, of course, until I get the cheque, the jury's out on the rebate company. At least I hope that this has served to warn DataColor and members here to be forewarned about status-now.com. Hopefully, they'll realise it's far better to deal with things in an honourable and prompt manner; it's easier in the end! Once again, thanks for your interest and feedback everyone.
