Title: Aperture Forum
Post by: Kenneth Sky on October 02, 2006, 02:11:20 pm
Michael:
Now that a more mature version of Aperture (1.5) is available can we have a separate forum for it as you've provided for Lightroom? And, BTW, since I'm asking, why not a tutorial DVD? It would be interesting to give us a comparison of the two applications as LR gets close to launch.

I have not paid much attention to Aperture because when I discovered its original fatal flaw (the database) it didn't meet my needs and I shelved it.

But now it looks like a real contender and I plan on spending more time with it. A tutorial would be a lot of work, and the program isn't one that I'm that familar with – yet.

Anyone else want an Aperture forum?

Personally, I would vote for a Aperture section, "if" Apple allowed a 30 day trial.

I'm not going purchase the product untested.  I'm well served by Bridge, PS2,and Nik CaptureNX. I tend to look at other programs through trials, and have acquired PS2, Capture NX, PK Sharpener, Noise Ninja, and other software thru this evauation method.

I'm currently warming up to LightRoom, waiting for repair tools (cloning, BandAid, etc)

Apple are you listening!!!!

No, but I'm sure that soon you will be able to buy an ipod the size of your thumbnail.

Heh.. you can buy an iPod the size of your thumbnail.. or at least pretty darn close if you have large hands.

Michael you don't sound like you'd rush anything but don't go making a tutorial anytime soon, it's pretty obvious this kind of app deserves a long learning period to really learn the tips and tricks.

I haven't watched it yet but Apple includes a DVD that is a video tutorial.  It's in the Box, maybe you can get it without buying the product.  There is also a really nice thick "getting started" book in the box and an even more thorough Online manual.  Unfortunately 1.5 is not on the shelf, so all the printed docs & the DVD are already out of date.

The lack of a demo or trial period is a bit obnoxious for such an expensive product but I guess Adobe doesn't do it with Photoshop either does it?

If you take some data into the Apple Store they will work with you a little.  Not enough to make up for now way to evaluate the software at home, but better then nothing.

Yes, I would welcome an Aperture Forum, thanks for considering one.  Nothing like a little competition to drive development of better products.  While I would appreciate Apple following suit with a "free trial" similiar to what Adobe has done in what really is a master stroke of marketing, Apple just wouldn't be apple if they just followed along.

Ben,

Adobe does offer a 30 day trial of Photoshop.
I took advantage of this before buying the license.

Speaking as a programmer having the demo period like that opens up a giant can of worms for the company.

While it's nice for honest users... every single version of Photoshop has had that demo key cracked and tons of pirate copies floating around.

I'm guessing their are already pirate versions of Aperture too though.

Hi everyone.

I am a (female) photgrapher living in The Netherlands (Europe).
My favorite subject is landscapes. Still working hard to improve myself ofcourse

Now I was looking for a forum on Aperture since I use this software since the day it was introduced.
I am not so keen on a Apple/Mac forum.. since they're all fans and maybe not so objective ?

I came across this site... it sure looks good !
But where is the Aperture forum ? did you actually start it up ??

Friendly click.

Sure, I would be up for an Aperture section. I just got version 1.5 last week, and am starting to dive in and find out if it will work for my needs.

So.. how can I open a forum?
I am new here.. can anyone explain?

I have updated my Aperture to 1.5 version last week as well ....
and I am still looking for clues .... where is the improvement?
other than getting a message everytime I close... "aperture is still processing previews"
I see no difference yet....
yet !
maybe I am just to lazy to look any deeper
but I was content with the last version..
I am the only one ??

Indeed.  Although I am rather invested (time-wise) in Lightroom I've been quite interested in how Aperture compares.  But, until today, I've not been able to spend any time with it.  So I eagerly downloaded the 30-day trial.

My first hour with Aperture was not encouraging.  It was unable to generate full-sized preview images from DNG files captured 10/31 (with a 1DsII) and converted with the latest Adobe DNG converter.  This is probably a temporary situation but was still discouraging.  (Earlier DNG's worked fine.)

Beyond this, Aperture features slightly different model and has some nice features.  I'd be interested in following its development and think a forum section devoted to it would be a positive feature here.

I have been using Aperture since day one and absolutely love this program.
Yes, there are little issues here and there but Apple has been taking care of these
things little by little and now with the exception of just a few filters, I rarely open
Photoshop.  Since Aperture is so customizable, once you set it up tailored for your
workflow, it makes the whole process so much easier.

I would very much like to see an Aperture forum here.

A question:

How do fellow Aperture users achieve softer b&w results with the in-built monochrome filter?

Mine have been very 'hard' and not particularly pleasing to the eye. The only example I have is below which isn't a particularly great image to start with:

There's a few options you can play with ...

'sharpen'  > intensity and radius
'edge sharpen' > intensity, edges and falloff

in combination with  'shadows and highlights'   (& advanced)

I am sure you could get good results

I usally use these options to give a soft picture a bit more 'bite'
I am sure it can be used the other way around too.. to soften a picture.

You can either soften your picture before you monochrome it or after you monochrome it..
I don'n know wich will give you the best result ....

Let us know!

I am not sure how many additional requests you need for action, but I love Aperture after 1 year's use. I am not so comfortable, however, to not need a forum. So, if you are on the fence, I would like to add my vote to help push you over.........Please create an Aperture forum.

YES, it is looking more interesting to me now.
I would like some ideas on workflow and asset management with Aperture (whether to use Apertures Library or not).
I am considering buying it now. They also have a trial download now.

Thanks again

I just spent a day with an Apple trainer getting more up to speed with Aperture, so, yes, I'll definately be providing more insight into things Aperturish.

This is a genuine question, not an attack or dispute of any kind: but what differentiates these two apps from other options to merit a separate forum? Since the forum is growing steadily, would it be useful to change the categories slightly: make a category say "RAW processing & file management", then add forums "Aperture". "Lightroom", and "Other". It can then be naturally extended to include other apps if enough discussion accumulates...?
