Title: Nikon D850 Autofocus in low light compared to D4 or D5?
Post by: haring on April 02, 2018, 05:42:10 pm
Is there anybody who has (or used to have) both the new Nikon D850 AND D3 or D4 or D5?

I am just wondering how similar the Autofocus in LOW LIGHT in the D850 compared to one of the Nikon D3, 4, 5 flagship cameras. Is AF same; accurate and fast for low light action, wedding reception dancing, etc?

Thanks so much!

Per my experience, the D850 AF is very very good on moving subjects in low light, but the D5 is still a bit better, bordering on magic.

I am getting more keepers.

Cheers,
Bernard

I own the 4/5/850. The 850 and 5 are eons better than the 4. The 5 slightly better than the 850 (I think this is bc the larger body = more room for a motor? not 100% sure). I put the D850-5 difference at roughly 10-15%, and both at least 50% better than the 4. That's all in low to no light. Bright light? They're all excellent.

AF on 20MP is not as critical as 46MP- so that may be a bit slower/ less sensitive...
One thing to point out is that AF ( d850) in the OVF state is much better in darkness than liveview. I sees better and is much quicker.
Also it is very precise (after lens calibration).
