Title: New H3D full frame!!!
Post by: wilburdl on September 29, 2006, 10:53:52 pm
It's finally here. Full frame medium format. The H3D was announced at Photokina, and well, I want one. But at $32,000, I think I'll wait....

>>Hasselblad Launches World's First 48mm Full-Frame DSLR Camera System

>>Hasselblad is today firmly positioning itself as the pre-eminent provider of high-end digital cameras with >>the launch of the Hasselblad H3D, the world's first 48mm full-frame DSLR camera system. The H3D is the >>result of Hasselblad's strategy of taking photographic flexibility and image quality to new levels, as yet >>unseen in any competing product. When compared with high-end 35mm DSLRs, the H3D delivers >>unmatched pixel resolution, better colors and detail rendering and a new choice of viewfinders for >>creative image composition. In comparison with digital backs, the H3D delivers image quality with a >>higher level of detail and true sharpness thanks to Hasselblad's Digital APO Correction (DAC) and the >>advances of its new Ultra-Focus functionality. The H3D's full-frame concept offers unique control of >>image composition and with its new 28mm lens, the H3D allows photographers for the first time ever to >>take wide angle shots on a 36 x 48mm sensor.

>>U.S. MSRP Pricing is as follows:
>>H3D-22: $26,995
>>H3D-39: $31,995

It's not "full frame". It's marketing BS. The chip is exactly the same size as the one in other 39MP cameras. I'll have a rather strongly worded artcile on this later today.

------------

I think everyone needs to wait until theses hassies are around to actually  play with..

Upgrading an H1/2 to a 3 is not the end of the world if, as I suspect it is just a firmware upgrade

The claim that it will not work with other backs is proably BS too

a) My sinar/your P45 work on a H1/2 they probably will with a 3

B ) Back manufaturesrs will simply work out what electronics are being outputted and design accordingly maybe at loss of some Exif data or lense data

(I am sure BMW say 'our cars only work with BMW wheels' - but everyone knows there is a thriving market for aftermarket alloys!)

c) it is true that thier lenses will probalby no longer cover the full 645 area - bad for filmies but no bad thing for dig chaps, hassies movenment to the 'new format' has enabled the 28 lense to be possible and may also bring future offereings

-----------------

Did you compare your H2 to the 3?

Is the back mounting the same ??

Is the mirror any way modified to allow a 'deeeper penetrating lense' ???

Did you try and put the 28 on your 2 does it fit - did it fire ????

One these questions can be answered (negativley) Phase and Leaf owners can be angry, Emotion owners will smugly order another system fitting for £600 and move on

Seconded !

The main news here is it's not open to third party backs anymore.

I am not sure all of the fuss about the H3D being a closed platform is justified. It appears from Hasselblad's web site that the H2 is still in the product line. If the only practical difference between the two cameras is  that you need to use the H3D with the Hasselblad back and it then allows you to access  the digital lens correction capabilities with H series lenses, you have a choice that seems perfectly fair and reasonable to me, and Hasselblad cannot be accused of locking out third party back manufacturers from their camera system. OTOH, if they were  to discontinue the H2, that's  another matter, but I don't think for competitive reasons they will go there. I doubt they are that confident about the marketplace's acceptance of their DBs compared to Phase  or Leaf.

just like the 28mm will not work on a H1/2... any new lens that will be developed won't work on the H1/2...only on the H3 which will only take the Hasselblad back...so the choices are either hasselblad all the way with the H3D or a now officially dead system (H1/2) with a phase, sinar or leaf back

Morgan,

Why indulge in conjecture and speculation? The CEO of the company made the situation quite clear at his press conference. There's little point in pretending or wishing otherwise.

I don't understand your anger, Michael. Lens mounts have been proprietary for years. Why shouldn't digital back mounts be? This isn't a new practice.

Hasselblad is doing all it can to gain market share and ensure its survival. It is just business, that's all. And it is going to either succeed admirably or fail spectacularly on its decision. As Richard Mandelkorn says in another post, the rest will simply have to think about ways of remaining competitive. Hasselblad doesn't owe them anything to keep them alive.

Time will tell. Don't let your allegiance to Phase One cloud your judgment.

[a href=\"index.php?act=findpost&pid=78502\"][{POST_SNAPBACK}][/a]

Because it is my experience that the camera makers definition of the phrase 'wont work' is different to mine

Also the camera manufacturers definition of the phrase 'will work' is also different to mine

For example the H1/2 one is is specced to cover the full 645 area by Blad so to them the 28 'wont work' on these bodies

As a digital shooter I dont need that 645 coverage so for me if it covers my chip and stops down and fires it 'will work'

I have a lot of Nikkor glass that 'wont work' on my SLRN but this glass 'will work' if you are happy, as I am, to not have metering

So the blanket phrase 'wont work' often has a lot more behind it and in some cases should be read as 'will not acheive full manufacturers operational specification'

It is my conjecture and speculation that hassies phrase 'wont work' should be replaced with  'will not acheive full manufacturers operational specification'

---------------------------------------

You own a H1/2 you where at 'kina

I repeat my question did you hold the 28 lense, try attaching it your body and actuating the shutter button

If so what happened??

If not why not??
