Title: Migration from LR, some questions
Post by: Javier S. on March 19, 2018, 06:59:39 am
Hi

I´m planning to migrate from Lightroom to C1 but haven´t found yet answer to some questions:

Is c1 fully parametric as LR, even with layers and sharpening?. I found through thye years the value of preserving the original files and redevelope them with newer software versions.

How many files, roughly, can it hold in one catalog? C1 says thousands but that means nothing to any serioous photographer. Is it 2.000, 200.000 or 1 million?
For me working with a single catalog is Paramount so I can go forth and back on the searchs among around 170.000 photographs.

Any suggestions about a really good book and or tutorials to learn the software in full. I´ve been working for 8 years with LR and came to a pretty nice understanding about it, so changing will take quite some effort and time.

It's fully parametric.

In theory number of files in the catalogue is unlimited, in practice this seems to vary tremendously from user to user. Some say it's unusable with 30 - 40, 000 or even less, others say they are having no problems  with a few hundred thousand images.

Phase One seem to make minor to major improvements with every point release, so comments are often out of date with actual performance.

Unlike LR, you can have multiple catalogues open at the same time with C1, so you could split catalogues up if you were having a problem, and run duplicate searches, but there is no automated way of doing this.

My experience suggests C1 is (much) slower to load the catalogue than LR (but this is meant to have improved with recent releases), but once loaded it works (much) more quickly than LR, especially in terms of rendering previews.  But judging from comments from others, there are some types of searches that are very slow in C1 ( I can't remember what they are).

How satisfactory the catalogue is in C1 seems to come down to personal requirements and expectations.

There is a lot of help around for C1, a lot can be found by searching/browsing through this forum. For example, there was a very recent post on a tutorial to get you started with C1.

But, a good starting point is the C1 Youtube channel. https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCJgJWICGMzzvXk2wIgqxVEQ/videos

But there is also a fair amount of other related material on Youtube.

Lynda.com and Creative Live do paid for courses on C1

The only book I am aware of, is this one. https://rockynook.com/shop/photography/capture-one-pro-10/

It's useful, but doesn't go that deep.

Cheers,

Graham

Yes, and I am enjoying reworking some of my favourite LR edits too.

Indeed. Like in the early days of LR when people kept throwing out pretty small numbers as a maximum size. I have 64 000 in my catalogue and am happy with performance...

Yeah, that sums things up pretty well. One thing that helped me was selecting the all images collection - which triggered a fair amount of activity within C1. I brought all my images over in one shot so all 64 000 images were new. I had lots of issues as I navigated around until I let C1 work away on displaying the all images collection.

Now there are some cases were the query is slower than I would have liked but the bulk of navigating and filtering - especially in folders or smaller collections is just fine.

The ability to filter in C1 is pretty powerful so you can express searches in C1 that you cannot in LR. Which is nice occasionally.

As an example this weekend I was working with a group of images taken on day last spring - around 400. I had missed rating them and keywording them in LR so I spent the day navigating around that set of images making sure they all had keywords and star ratings and then I filtered it down to 39 of my favourites for editing. I had no issues with the performance. In fact now that I think about it it was significantly better than LR because as I was checkign focus using the loop view or zooming there was no waiting for the 100% preview. I took no action to create 100% previews like I would have in LR and C1 was just smooth and felt nice to navigate in.

I am not the least bit worried about a single catalogue including all my images going forward.

But, a good starting point is

Good links. The Phase one youtube channel has a lot of really good content especially for those of us just getting going.

As for the actual import of the LR catalogue: I had problems but with the help of support figured out how to get a successful import in one shot. I am IanL on the phase one forum:

https://forum.phaseone.com/En/viewtopic.php?f=52&t=27207#p130622

Sort version: I exported a catalogue from LR without the HDR.dng and additional versions (filtered as described in the post); so nothing would trip up the import or mess with the counts respectively. That gave me one shot one new C1 catalogue with everything.

That's good to know, and although 64,000 images isn't as big a catalogue as the OP, its a lot bigger than mine is.

Hi,

Thanks for mentioning this eBook. ;)

It was written by me, but I haven't made a post about it on this forum because I believe it would be against the rules. It would probably be considered advertising/spam, but I do check this forum regularly.
