Any suggestions please?
Ideally, I'd like to use something around 7"/8" that will take my Canon 5D batteries.
The choice is mind-boggling (though I'm never really sure of battery compatibility with my Canon from product descriptions.)
Any bells and whistles I should be considering in my choice also appreciated.

You can certainly get less expensive, but Small HD (https://www.smallhd.com) are very good and their latest is usable outdoors in bright light. Check out the available tripod clamps particularly for stills use

If you're using the display as a viewfinder for operating the camera, get the brightest display you can afford. Otherwise, you won't be able to see where you are aiming in daylight, even with a shade on the display.

That's exactly what I would be doing, so I guess that limits the choice.
What sort of display brightness should I be looking for?

We use the smallhd 702 bright. It's been recommended by a lot of others, as well my very trusty and gear knowledgable operators and 1st/2nd AC from Local 600 that I frequently work with. They often work with even "better" smallhd versions for focus etc. but then again they look at these for 12+h a day, 5 days a week for weeks if not month.

I was a fan of SmallHD, have Dp1, Dp6, 502.
SmallHD was bought by Vitec a while ago, Vitec seem to ruin everything.
Simply my 502 I broke the SDI with a small knock, and Small wont replace it, even though they changed the design to toughen up the port.
Anyway, I dont really trust them any more.

I love the smallHD firmware, swipe business, and the RGB waveform (pulled full screen) which is the best (IMO) way to understand your exposure.
Now my latest monitor (an upgrade to the 2008 DP1) is the Atomos Shogun Flame, and Im getting along with that well as recording is brilliant.
It is so easy to playback what you just shot - even a director can do it with the Atomos, as it has a swipe interface.
The screen is a bit shiny and not super bright though.
Right now spending $800 Id give it to Atomos, not Small.
Clearly Small have some good higher end monitors with more fancy screens though.

With any monitor in 2018 it is IMO critical that they support LUTs and offer RGB waveform.

For something basic (no recording no LUTs) there are some $200 monitors that are pretty usable (suprisingly so) - cant remember the brand.

For your canon specifically an external recording might help, especially as some of the monitor-recorders have half decent audio inputs (and Video Devices - can record top end audio)
Video Devices and Transvideo are the rock solid brands build wise, for big $$, but technically behind the curve
