Title: Junco Action
Post by: churly on January 05, 2018, 05:58:34 pm
Some Juncos discussing dominance in the flock.

These interactions are over almost before they start so you have to learn to anticipate the action.  These are not without technical issues but they did catch some interesting behavior.

Nice! #2 looks like a zoological illustration.

Thanks for your comments guys.  Most of the time these little guys are pretty placid and as I said the aggressive displays start and finish very rapidly.  All of the time at the feeder they murmur back and forth to each other in constant conversation.  Unfortunately the neighborhood cats have decimated the local Junco population.  We are hosting a feeding flock of 15 or so that several years ago was more like 40 birds.  It was an excellent year for seeds and cones so we may see more in the the group and winter moves on.

Scott - yes they are all a bit illustration like because the action didn't start until after the feeding station went into shadow.  I was hoping for a bit more contrast.

Hi Chuck, I like them all, but the one in the air in #2 has an "expression" that reminds me of the famous "Mad Bluebird" photo.

Yes, they are all fine. But no-2 is quite spectacular.

Thanks again for the comments.
Not as colorful and 'angry bluebird' but yes the thought and intensity is there.
However, anger isn't the emotion that I carry away from Junco's.  They are, by the most part, quite amicable little birds and a delight to watch.  They are truly the classic snowbird and seem to be perfectly content to be out in heavy wind and snow.  In fact, I think they prefer it because, as ground feeders, the predators (mostly cats and sharpshin hawks) don't come out in bad weather.

Oh, lovely. I quite like the low-contrast look, in fact, it seems to work here... :)

These photos are great! No "stuffed birds" here.
