Title: Beta 4 during Photokina?
Post by: David White on September 19, 2006, 02:18:11 pm
Anyone taking bets that Beta 4 will be announced within the next week considering Apple's probable anouncement of a new Aperture at the Photokina press conference on Monday?

I would really welcome that. Beta 3 on Windows needs serious attention.

And hopefully Beta 4 will pick up the new Canon CR2 format, which is unreadable in the current beta.

Camera RAW 3.5 supports the new Rebel if that's what you're referring to.

The following was posted by Thomas Knoll earlier today (19 September)

To answer the most likely questions:

No, this update does not support the Nikon D80 nor the Canon 400D [Rebel XTi] yet. We receieved these cameras too late in our development cycle to make the cut for this release. We understand there are a lot of users now getting these cameras who want support as soon as possible.

There are also a bunch of other cameras models likely to be announced at Photokina which will want to support as soon as possible.

Because of this demand, we are planning to make the time gap between the ACR 3.5 and 3.6 releases shorter than usual, so you will not have to wait all that long for support.

Also, we are nearing completion of the Beta 4 release of Lightroom. This will be released fairly soon (before the release of ACR 3.6). Lightroom is currently in a free public beta program:

http://labs.adobe.com/technologies/lightroom (http://labs.adobe.com/technologies/lightroom)

Beta 4 of Lightroom will have preliminary support for both the Nikon D80 and the Canon 400D.

So in the time period the Beta 4 release of Lightroom (soon) and ACR 3.6 (shorter cycle than usual), you wil be able to processor your Nikon D80 and Canon 400D files using Lightroom Beta 4. You will also have the option of using the Beta 4 build Lightroom to convert the Nikon D80 and Canon 400D raw files into DNG format, which can then be used with ACR versions as old as 2.4.

Ops, I screwed up (again). I thought I saw it on the list. Bummer.

Knoll's note makes it sound like Beta 4 is right around the corner; like Very Soon. Which means I better take a quick look at the LL disk on Beta 3, which arrived today.

Don't worry Andrew. It also mentions the fast track Version 3.6 and that Beta 4 will support them, which is the issue. Incidentally I want to thank you for your active involvement in the numerous Lightroom forums.

I recall [rightly or wrongly - I just cant remember] reading a quote somewhere from Jeff S. [I can never spell his surname right - so henceforth its Jeff S. - sorry Jeff!] that we would be using Beta 4 by the end of September.

I look forward to LR Beta 4.  I like Lightroom.  It's not the only Raw converter that I use, but for certain things it is excellent (split toning for example).  It is also great for converting then printing without having to go to Photoshop.
