Title: Full-frame mirrorless from Canon rumored also for next year
Post by: davidgp on September 27, 2017, 08:11:29 am
Hi,

Looks like the big players are planning to land in Full-Frame mirrorless market next year. Now it is time for rumours about Canon: http://www.canonrumors.com/will-it-be-the-eos-m1-cr2/

Regards,

David

Not sure what Canon will add to the party coming in so late? Biggest reason is probably their loss in market share.
Sony has a 5 year jump on most of the competition.
The only negative with Sony is having to change out lens systems which can get really expensive.
I have Sony and Nikon and am finally selling out my Nikon system as the Sony is that good.
Lens adapters work really well so you can keep your favorite lenses.
For sure they will sell a ton. Just a little surprised they took so long.

I usually don’t care about new camera releases such as the Nikon 850 but so what, lots of people want a camera like that so I don’t really get involved. However in this case I don't care so much that I will respond.

Canon would have to come up with a minimum of 40MP and 20 frames a second and do it all for under $1000 with free lenses before I switch back.

Shot Canon for years and the support and help I got over the years was absolutely zero. Sony isn’t even represented in South Africa and that support is better than the Canon bumbling I had to endure.

If the new mirrorless body is what 6D2 should have been I'll buy it. I also have a Sony a7 but I vastly prefer the ergonomics of my Canons, so I'm hoping the a7 will be a stopgap solution until Canon gets serious about fullframe mirrorless.

Don't get too excited based on this news item:
1) The Nikon mirrorless full-frame story has been mostly debunked. Basically, the interviewer pleaded with the interviewee to confirm his hopes for Nikon FULL FRAME mirrorless, and the reply was a diplomatic "that option should be considered", which commits to nothing, and in fact implies that the decision has not been made yet.

2) Yet this CR article assumes that the Nikon rumor is an established fact, which reveals the author's lack of comprehension or wishful thinking.

3) Even then, it is rated a lowly CR2, and reads likes passing on the speculation of an anonymous source.

That's the nature of rumors :)

P.D.: Not really excited about this, a bit indifferent to say the truth. I have already switched to Sony... now buying Sony native lenses... and not that big amount of income to be switching system every 5 years...

I've used Canon cameras since the TLb, apart from a brief sojurn with Nikon when the FD mount was dropped.
Canon is the Toyota of photography, doing things slowly and conservatively. But the move to mirrorless has been particularly slow.
That said, I have been enjoying my M3 , apart from focus speed, and so am looking forward to seeing what Canon are doing in FF mirrorless.
I suspect they are taking their getting the body / lens iterface right. The new lenses for liveview (including EF-M) are STM, not the USM of EF lenses. Canon needs to get this right, given their past investment in EF lenses (of which I have six). I can't imagine they would do an FD/EF on me again. But I hope the new mount is modified for a shorter flange distance and DPAF technology, but with a simple adapter (like that for EF-M) could accept EF lenses.
