Title: Burkholders Gold Leaf On Vellum
Post by: deanwork on September 03, 2017, 09:31:02 am
Does anyone know what vellum Burkholder is using for his gold leaf prints.

I'm also looking for a great vellum that has an inkjet receptor coating. Does one exist?

I asked this a couple of years ago and still don't know.

EDIT:  Not sure what he is using, but if I was going to work in this area, this is what I'd be experimenting with:

How big do his prints get?

One vellum Burkholder uses is Canson Vidalon Vellum.

One can make as large a print as the size of vellum is available, I think Burkholder's max might be 12x18 though I'm not positive about that. You can e-mail him and I'm sure he will be happy to answer your question directly. He is a very nice guy.

John,
There are several brands of vellum made specifically for inkjet such as Strathmore. I believe Dan uses the Canson Vidalon because it is pH neutral, important for many alt. processes such as palladium/platinum but not inkjet printing. Actually many processes work better with papers that are not buffered and have an acidic pH such as cyanotype and the various POP and DOP palladium/platinum methods. Agyrotype is another and is very beautiful and can be toned with noble metals for color change and archival results. It's a silver based process.

Papers with inkjet coatings are not good candidates for alt processes but I do know some folks have used inkjet coated vellums and used Dan's gold leaf method instead of worrying about printing with a wet process first.

Burkholder uses Butler Dearden Transvel Vellum. http://www.butlerdearden.com/alternative-process-transvel/
