Title: Fuji GFX 50c - my second lens?
Post by: Lust4Life on August 27, 2017, 11:26:19 am
I hope to hear particularly from folks that are using the Fuji GFX, but all opinions are appreciated.

Given:
98% of my work is Landscape.  Thus I purchased the 23mm when I bought the GFX and I'm totally impressed with it.
Would like to do a little bit of street work but I now want to focus some of portraits!

GFX lenses currently available, sticking strictly to lenses made for the GFX:
32-64mm Zoom f/4, cost $2,400, weight 1.93#s

63mm prime f/2.8, cost $1,500, weight 14.29 oz

110mm prime f/2, cost $2800, weight 2.22 lbs

Now, from shooting decades of MFD, and MFFile before that, it was extremely rare that I would use the normal 80mm lens - was a waste of money.  I did use the Hassie 100mm lens on occasions but for the few portraits that I have done in the past.

Next, from what I'm reading in reviews, the 32-64 is just as sharp as the 63mm prime, and sharpness is extremely important to me, then I might as well grab the zoom for the obvious advantages.  So I've removed the 63mm from the equation.

I'm thinking that the 110mm would be the more ideal lens for portraits, but wondering if the 32-64 would be "good enough" for portraits YET give me a nice mid range for my landscape work, thus making it the better of the choices between the 32-64mm verse the 110mm.

Again, my experience with portraits is VERY limited, yet I am finding I am really interested in trying out more of it along with some street work as I wander about.

Advice from this forum is appreciated as there is no Fuji dealer in North Carolina that I can visit and test out the lenses.
Yes, I know the ideal answer is to have both, but that is not an option at this point in time.

This might help you decide on a focal length: http://www.danvojtech.cz/blog/2016/07/amazing-how-focal-length-affect-shape-of-the-face/

Very interesting visuals.
So, the Fuji 110 is equivalent to a 87 in 35mm.
The 32-64 Zoom is equivalent to 51mm in 35.

From looking at the photos in the site above, frankly I tend to go for the look of the 50mm.

Also seems the 32-64 zoom would have more opportunities for use in landscape situations than a fixed 110mm

Would like others thoughts on this.

the zoom is so good, it's really a no brainer for the gfx....i shoot people have yet to find a real excuse to get the 120.....the zoom really replaces so many primes for me and i am always surprised that it is even long enough for tighter shots (for me)....afaik there is a smaller 45 coming out in the next week or so, smaller, lighter and might be a good addition as well....

Ahh, great info - your shooting people - so it is not just wishful thinking that I could make good use of the 32-64 for landscapes AND STILL make decent portraits and street scenes?

my favorite focal length for FF 35mm is 40mm.....that is pretty much as wide as i am comfortable with shooting people and i am not afraid to get too close (distortion, noses, big heads,....) and it still shows a nice wider angle in terms of setting/environment....
the fuji zoom really is my dream lens in that regard....it covers wider when i need it and i can close in a bit to get a tighter shot.....i used to do a lot of portraits with my nikon 60mm....so the 65 is plenty for me....
the 110 or 120 are of course the more classic portrait lenses but they also have a much tighter, more compressed feeling....
