Title: External microphone suggestions for phone & iPad?

I know that there is a forum for iPhone photography. But, I'm hoping that this forum is a bit more relevant in terms of kit.

I want to buy an external mic for my iPhone.

I've read loads of reviews, and I'll probably go with the Rode VideoMic ME.

My only concern is that almost all reviews focus on using these mics for the likes of YouTube vlogging.

So, it's mostly about closeup voice.

Are they also ok for wider sound capture? E.g. Landscape atmosphere etc.

The ME's out-of-the box suitability seems to be a winner for me, as is the headphone monitoring jack.

I have no use for a lapel mic.
